5. Flashlight
Read the text and label the picture by using the highlighted words in the text.

A flashlight is an electric light. A tiny wire inside the bulb lights up when
electricity flows through it. Electricity comes from the batteries, through metal pieces,
called electrodes to the bulb. The batteries are behind the bulb. They are held in place
by a spring in the end of the flashlight case. The switch on the outside of the flashlight
controls the flow of electricity. When the switch is pressed, a small piece of copper
touches the battery. The electricity starts flowing. A reflector is a cone-shaped piece of
shiny metal. It is covered by a lens made of a curved piece of glass.

6. Touchy topics
Read the text then look at the following questions. Are they polite when you
meet someone for the first time in Britain?

In Britain, when people meet each other for the first time, they
talk about things like family, work, school or sports. They ask questions
like Where do you come from? and Where do you live? These are polite
questions. They are not personal or private.
But some things are personal or private, and questions about them
are not polite. People dont ask questions about a persons salary. They
dont ask how much someone is paid for something. It is OK to ask
children how old they are, but it is not polite to ask older people their age. It
is also not polite to ask people questions about politics or religion unless
you know them well.

7. Read the following passage first,

Of all the children I knew at school, the one I have the fondest memories
of is Reggie Bennett. His apparent gruffness made me a bit wary of him when
we first met, and I thought that he was something of a rough diamond.
Through his quick wit and leadership, however, he quickly gained everyone's
admiration and became the school's golden boy, both in the classroom and
the playground.
Perhaps the main reason for Reggie's popularity was his ability to tell
great stories about ghosts and aliens. Once, being the gullible person I am, I
believed him. When I realised he'd been pulling my leg I got embarrassed, but
I tried to put on a brave face .
Despite all the teasing, though Reggie would never stab a friend in the
back as, to him disloyalty among friends was unforgivable and it really made
his hackles rise if anyone talked about him behind his back. I shall never
forget the time when he found out that someone had been telling everybody,
untruthfully, that he had cheated in a test: Reggie got very hot under the
collar.
Apart from such occasions, however, Reggie always kept his cool and
thanks to his down-to-earth character, he was always the best person to
consult if you needed practical advice.
I often wonder what happened to Reggie after we left school. However, I'm
certain of one thing: with a character as special as his, he deserved the best
in life.

then, on the basis of the passage, mark the statements TRUE (T) or
FALSE (F)

T/F
The writer of the passage was Reggie's teacher.
Once Reggie turned out to have cheated in a test.
In the school, Reggie was both popular and successful.

6
Reggie had a practical but quick-tempered personality.
In most of the cases, Reggie remained calm in difficult
situations.

Look at the underlined words in the text and find a word or expression
