ANTISOCIAL PERSONALITY DISORDER

Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) is a disorder characterized by a pattern of

disregard for, and violation of the rights of others that begins in childhood or early adolescence
and continues into adulthood.

This poster depicts a person with Antisocial personality disorder with its manifestations
and management. The person behind the bars represents a person with ASPD because according
to some researches, ASPD is more prevalent in prisoners and these bars also symbolizes the gap
between the patient and the people around him because a person with ASPD does not accept the
opinions of others.

A person with ASPD often exhibits manifestations or pathological personality traits in the
following domains. First domain is Antagonism characterized by manipulativeness wherein there
is a frequent use of subterfuge to influence or control others, use of seduction and charm to
achieve ones ends. Another is deceitfulness wherein the patient shows dishonesty and
fraudulence. Callousness is also present is the patient or there is lack of concern for feelings or
problems of others. Then hostility in which there is persistent or frequent angry feelings,
irritability in response to slights and minor insults. On the second domain is Disinhibition
characterized by irresponsibility, impulsivity or acting on a momentary basis without a plan or
consideration of outcomes and last would be risk-taking or there is engagement in dangerous,
risky and potentially self-damaging activities, unnecessarily and without regard for
consequences. These manifestations are shown in the poster above the person behind the bars
with ASPD.

The management of ASPD are use of certain psychiatric medications like mood
stabilizers and antipsychotics to treat symptoms like impulsive aggression which is shown in the
poster on the lower level of the stairs. The next would be Psychotherapy in individual setting and
in a support group setting. Psychotherapy or talk therapy is place on the higher level of the stairs
because this is the main management of the disorder. Then highest level of the stairs, the mask
symbolizes the person with ASPD who is cured and turned into a person who is now a mentally
healthy person. These management are shown in this way to see that these lead the way from
being in a person with ASPD to mentally healthy person.
