Chapter 1
Functional Description
Conventionally the UL DPCCH is transmitted all the time in each slot. UL_DTX
introduced in R7 indicates that UE will automatically execute discontinuous uplink
DPCCH transmission according to some patterns. If there is neither E-DCH nor
HS-DPCCH transmission, UE would automatically stop continuous DPCCH transmission
and applies a known DPCCH activity pattern in order to reduce DPCCH transmission
and maintain the uplink synchronization between NodeB and UE. Once E-DCH or
HS-DPCCH starts transmitting, the rapid resumption of DPCCH transmission will be
ready. In order to maintain the essential uplink synchronization during the inactivity, the
known DPCCH activity pattern must keep the stated transmission period including two
discontinuous DPCCH transmission periods applied in UL_DTX: UE_DTX_cycle_2 and
UE_DTX_cycle_1.

UL_DTX technique principle

In order to use and manage DTX/DRX function, RNC supply the switch parameter
DtxDrxSwch to indicate whether DTX/DRX to support. Different strategies would be
supplied to DTX/DRX according to different services. For the real-time service, all the
non-voice CS services such as fax, video and so on cannot use DTX/DRX because of
the transmission continuity. Only the service of VoIP, CSAMR or I/B, etc will be possibly
gap transmission. The voise services (VoIP of AMR over HSDPA) with the short gap
in which there is no data transmission can be controlled by RNC switch parameter
(RtDtxDrxSwch) to startup for increasing flexibility. As the same reason, startup of
non-real time services will be controlled by RNC switch parameter (NrtDtxDrxSwch).
Due to the different service characteristic, different services will exist different DTX/DRX
configurations which are indicated by DtxDrxConfigIdx. Each DtxDrxConfigIdx
corresponds to one DTX/DRX configuration. To fulfill Mobility management, if the
actual DTX/DRX capability of neighboring cell can't be achieved, then the parameter
CpcDtxDrxSuptInd is used to indicate whether neighboring cell supports CPC DTX-DRX.
Besides, to support DTX/DRX, the CPC cell support switch CpcSuptInd should be ON.

When discontinuous uplink DPCCH transmission is activated, and there has not been
any E-DCH transmission for the last MAC Inactivity Threshold-1 (corresponding to
the parameter MacInactThresh indicating the MAC inactivity threshold used for the
periodic E-TFC selection every other MAC DTX cycle TTIs) E-DCH TTIs, UE shall do the
periodic E-TFC selection every other MAC DTX cycle sub-frames. MAC DTX cycle is
respectively equal to MAC DTX Cycle for 2ms TTI, i.e. the parameter MacDtxCycTti2 for
2ms E-DCH TTI or MAC DTX Cycle for 10ms TTI, i.e. the parameter MacDtxCycTti10. If
actual maximum UE DTX cycle of neighboring cell can't be achieved, the corresponding

parameter MaxDtxCyc is used to indicate the maximum UE DTX cycle supported by the
neighboring cell for continuous packet connectivity DTX-DRX operation.
UL_DTX may be further deactivated or activated by layer 1 HS-SCCH orders.
When UL_DTX is activated, the UE shall not transmit the uplink DPCCH in a slot when all
of the following conditions are met:
1. There is no HARQ-ACK transmission on HS-DPCCH overlapping with the UL DPCCH
slot,
2. There is no CQI transmission on HS-DPCCH overlapping with the UL DPCCH slot,
3. There is no E-DCH transmission during the UL DPCCH slot,
4. The slot is in DTX in the UL_DPCCH.
5. The UL DPCCH preamble or postamble is not transmitted in the slot.
The procedure for the discontinuous transmission of DPCCH in UL_DTX is described as
follows:
UL_DTX pre-defines two discontinuous DPCCH transmission periods: UE_DTX_cycle_2
and UE_DTX_cycle_1 (be respectively corresponding to the parameters DtxCyc1Tti2,
DtxCyc1Tti10 and DtxCyc2Tti2, DtxCyc2Tti10 according to the cases of 2msTTI
and 10msTTI). UE_DTX_cycle_2 is a integer multiple of UE_DTX_cycle_1. If there
has not been any uplink transmission, the period of DPCCH periodic transmission
is UE_DTX_cycle_1 sub-frame. The number of sub-frames transmitted in each
period is controlled by the parameter UE_DPCCH_burst_1 (corresponding to
DpcchBurst1). If there has not been any E-DCH transmission for the last
Inactivity_Threshold_for_UE_DTX_cycle_2 ((be respectively corresponding to
the parameters DtxCyc2InactTrd2 and DtxCyc2InactTrd10 according to the cases
of 2msTTI and 10msTTI)) E-DCH TTIs, the period shall be UE_DTX_cycle_2
sub-frames. The number of sub-frames transmitted in each period is controlled by the
parameter UE_DPCCH_burst_2 (corresponding to DpcchBurst2). The parameters of
UE_DTX_cycle_1 and UE_DTX_cycle_2 will be invalid.
The UL_DTX pattern is illustrated in Figure 1-1 for 2ms E-DCH TTI and Figure 1-2 for
10ms E-DCH TTI.

Chapter 1 Functional Description

Figure 1-2 UL_DTX pattern for 10ms E-DCH TTI (pre-/postambles not shown)

During the procedure of UL_DTX activation, UE will transmit DPCCH preamble and
postamble for the synchronization maintenance. The specific cases are described in the
following:
1. Preamble and postamble for the DPCCH transmission
If a UE will start a transmission of DPCCH based on the Uplink DPCCH burst pattern
at the start of slot s and finish its DPCCH transmission at the end of slot t, the UE
shall start the DPCCH transmission at the start of slot s-2 and continue the DPCCH
transmission till the end of slot t+1.
2. Preamble and postamble for the E-DCH transmission
If a UE will start a transmission of E-DPCCH and E-DPDCH on a E-DCH TTI, the UE
shall start the DPCCH transmission 2 slots prior to the E-DCH TTI and continue the
DPCCH transmission during the E-DCH TTI and consecutive E-DCH TTIs and 1 slot
after the last consecutive E-DCH TTI.
In addition, if there has not been any E-DCH transmission for the last
Inactivity_Threshold_for_UE_DTX_cycle_2 E-DCH TTIs, and if a UE will start a
transmission of E-DPCCH and E-DPDCH on a E-DCH TTI, the UE shall start the
DPCCH transmission UE_DTX_long_preamble_length slots prior to the E-DCH TTI
and continue the DPCCH transmission during the E-DCH TTI and consecutive
E-DCH TTIs and 1 slot after the last consecutive E-DCH TTI.
3. Preamble and postamble for the HS-DPCCH transmission
If a UE will start a transmission of HARQ-ACK, the UE shall start the DPCCH
transmission 2 slots prior to the DPCCH slot that coincides with or overlaps the start
of the HARQ-ACK field, unless the HARQ-ACK transmission is an HARQ Preamble
(PRE) in an HS-DPCCH sub-frame n 2. The UE shall continue the DPCCH
transmission during the HARQ-ACK field and until the end of the first full DPCCH slot
after the end of the HARQ-ACK field.
If a UE will start a transmission of CQI, the UE shall start the DPCCH transmission 3
slots prior to the DPCCH slot that coincides with or overlaps the start of the CQI field,
and continue the DPCCH transmission during the CQI field and until the end of the
first full DPCCH slot after the end of the CQI field.
In addition, if there has not been any E-DCH transmission for the last
Inactivity_Threshold_for_UE_DTX_cycle_2 E-DCH TTIs, and if a UE will
start a transmission of CQI, the UE shall start the DPCCH transmission

(UE_DTX_long_preamble_length + 1) slots prior to the DPCCH slot that coincides

with or overlaps the start of the CQI field, and continue the DPCCH transmission
during the CQI field and until the end of the first full DPCCH slot after the end of the
CQI field. If the transmission of the CQI is not known to the UE in advance due to
the change of CQI_DTX_Priority from 0 to 1 the preamble for the first CQI after the
change may start late resulting in a shorter preamble.

Chapter 2
Deployment in commercial
network and user benefit
This feature provides UL DTX function. UL DTX brings many benefits: improve user
experience, reduce UE power consumption, increase UE IDLE time, obviously reduce UL
interference, increase the number of online UEs and improve UL capacity.

In R6 and previously protocols of 3GPP, UE transmits uplink DPCCH continuously. But

UL DTX is introduced in R7, it means UE discontinuously transmits uplink DPCCH based
on some pattern automatically. It allows the UE to stop transmission of UL DPCCH in
case there is no transmission activity on E-DCH or HS-DPCCH. A pre-defined DPCCH
activity pattern is used to transmit periodically, it aims at reducing transmission of DPCCH
on one hand, and keeping synchronization between Node B and UE. Once E-DCH or
HS-DPCCH starts transmission, the transmission of uplink DPCCH is immediately restored
to normal status. UL DTX adopts 2 kinds of discontinuous DPCCH transmission periods:
UE_DTX_cycle_2 and UE_DTX_cycle_1, the former is integral multiple of the latter.
The voice services (VoIP of AMR over HSDPA) with the short gap
in which there is no data transmission can be controlled by RNC switch parameter
To fulfill Mobility management, if the actual DTX/DRX capability of neighboring cell cant be
achieved, then the parameter CpcDtxDrxSuptInd is used to indicate whether neighboring
cell supports CPC DTX-DRX. Besides, to support DTX/DRX, the CPC cell support switch
CpcSuptInd should be ON.
When discontinuous uplink DPCCH transmission is activated, and there has not been
any E-DCH transmission for the last MAC Inactivity Threshold-1 (corresponding to the
parameter MacInactThresh indicating the MAC inactivity threshold used for the periodic
E-TFC selection every other MAC DTX cycle TTIs) E-DCH TTIs, UE shall do the periodic
E-TFC selection every other MAC DTX cycle sub-frames. MAC DTX cycle is respectively
equal to MAC DTX Cycle for 2ms TTI, i.e. the parameter MacDtxCycTti2 for 2ms

E-DCH TTI or MAC DTX Cycle for 10ms TTI, i.e. the parameter MacDtxCycTti10. If
actual maximum UE DTX cycle of neighboring cell cant be achieved, the corresponding
parameter MaxDtxCyc is used to indicate the maximum UE DTX cycle supported by the
neighboring cell for continuous packet connectivity DTX-DRX operation.
If UE is currently in DTX/DRX state, and there is no data transmission for a long time,
then the UE need to switch the state from HSPA to PCH. ZTE RNC provides a parameter
DxHsBo0E4bThd, which indicates 4B event triggered times threshold from HSPA to PCH
under DTX/DRX.
