Young NTUC Plants Seeds
For A Green Future

1 Young NTUC volunteers were geared
with their spades and hoes to finish
what was unfinished on 24 July 2010
at Pulau Ubin. This unfinished business
was none other than the following phase
of Run 350, the Plant-A-Tree Programme under
the Garden City Fund. This will see the $22,900
raised from the run further benefitting the
environment with 229 new tree saplings being
planted in Singapore.
Young NTUC volunteers present on that
eventful Saturday had the honour to plant the
first 50 tree saplings along the 300-metre biking
trail at Pulau Ubin, truly making it a meaningful
green day. Shared Young NTUC Executive
Secretary Steve Tan: “Run 350 was our first
significant project in promoting
environmental awareness.
Young NTUC is now the proud
owner of the 350 Singapore’s
suite of programmes and
will continue to galvanise our
members towards promoting
sustainable growth. We are
happy to see our members
turning up for this tree planting
session which marks a closure
to this year’s Run 350 event.”
Besides doing their part for
the environment, Young NTUC
volunteers also had the chance
to bond and grow through
such activities. One of them is

a fairly new volunteer at Young NTUC. Her first
volunteering experience was at the TYN Wildlife
ACRES Volunteer Day that took place recently.
From playing a back-end role, Miss Gwee had
a change of role and was one of the volunteers
that led a group for the tree planting session.
“Opportunities as such have given me much
exposure, and it gives me the confidence to
interact with more people. If there are more 350
events upcoming, I will surely come back,” said
Miss Gwee.
The tree planting that took place was
organised in conjunction with the Nature Society
of Singapore that also shared with the youth
volunteers the importance of having trees in the
surroundings.
“
It is very interesting
to do something that
we haven’t done before,
and I wanted to join in this
tree planting session for two
reasons. Firstly it’s because
of the place Pulau Ubin, and
secondly because this tree
planting session is very
meaningful. In the future,
when we see the plant grow,
at least we know that we have
done something meaningful.”
