ASSIGNMENT # 4

STRENGTH OF MATERIALS

( UNIT IV )
Q(1) How are cylinders classified as thin or thick cylinders ? Explain the difference in
terms of diameter ( D ) and thickness (t) of the cylinders. What are the applications of
cylindrical pressure vessels ?

Q(2) Determine the maximum hoop stress across the section of a thick pipe of external
diameter 600 mm and internal diameter of 440 mm, when the pipe is subjected to internal
pressure of 30 N/mm2 and outside pressure is 0 N/mm2 .

Q(3) A rim type cylinder is rotating at a speed of 2400 rpm. If the mean diameter of the
flywheel is 750 mm and density of the material of the wheel is 8000Kg/m3, then find the
hoop stress produced in the rim due to rotation.

Q(4 ) What is a compound cylinder? Briefly explain the procedure and applications of
shrink fit. What are the boundary conditions for inner and outer cylinders to determine
hoop stresses. ? Use standard notations and constants a1, b1 and a2, b2 for Lame
equations.

Q(5) Using fundamental concepts, prove that the hoop stress induced in the rotating thin
cylinder is given by = r22. Where is the density of the material, r is the mean radius of
the thin cylinder and is the angular velocity of the cylinder.
