Assignment 1 of 2

Module Tutor: Yakub Mogul, E mail: y.iqbal@bolton.ac.uk

1
Assignment Title: Connecting Rod for an Internal Combustion
Engine

LEARNING OUTCOME:

Ensure fitness for purpose for all aspects of the problem including production,
operation, maintenance and disposal.

Demonstrate an extensive knowledge and understanding of a wide range of

engineering materials and components.

ASSESSMENT WEIGHTING

This assignment represents 50 % of the total assessment for the module.

ASSESSMENT INFORMATION

This assessment is for 100 marks. In order to pass the assessment; you have to get a
minimum of 40%.

DETAILED BRIEF

Aim: The aim of this assignment is for the student to use the information, data and
analysis techniques presented during lectures to design a connecting rod for an
internal combustion engine.

Objectives: By the end of this assignment the student should be able to:

Create and synthesise solutions to mechanical engineering problems.

Apply modelling and drawing techniques using CAD.

Locate information on and select materials and preparatory parts for particular
purposes.

2
Design Brief:

The following particulars refer to a four stroke cycle diesel engine:

Cylinder bore = 150 mm, Stroke = 187.5 mm, R.P.M. = 1200, Maximum gas pressure = 5.6 N/mm2,
Mass of reciprocating parts = 1.75 kg.

Figure 1 .Connecting Rod

Design the following parts.

1. The dimensions of an I-section connecting rod of forged steel with an elastic limit
compressive stress of 350 MPa. The ratio of the length of connecting rod to the length of
crank is 4 and the factor of safety may be taken as 5.Standard I section is given for
reference in Figure 1.

2. The wrist pin and crankpin dimensions on the basis of bearing pressures of 10 N/mm 2 and
6.5 N/mm2 of the projected area respectively; and

3. The dimensions of the small and big ends of the connecting rods, including the size of the
securing bolts of the crankpin end. Assume that the allowable stress in the bolts, is not to
exceed 35 N/mm2.
4. Need to produce detailed dimensioned sketches of the connecting rod showing the
provisions for lubrication.

Design Task:

Individual work has to be presented and you are to design a connecting rod for an
internal combustion engine for the application outlined above and produce an
assembly model and parts models which are necessary to explain your design
together with a design report.

3
Tasks:
1. Analyse the problem as thoroughly as possible through observation, calculation,
relevant research and assess the requirements for the connecting rod.

2. Using SOLIDWORKS, produce an assembly model of connecting rod.

3. Also, produce a sub-assembly model of the connecting rod arrangement and

from this, produce a cross-section Assembly Drawing containing the necessary
views and detail of the design and include balloon referencing and a BOM (Bill
of Materials).

4. Use of Design Data Handbook (Design data handbook for Mechanical

Engineers by K. Mahadevan and Balaveera Reddy, Machine tool design
handbook, Cmti.) is encouraged and proper referencing has to be provided of
the data taken.

Background information and procedures will be given during design sessions enabling the
completion of the above tasks.

To be submitted for assessment:

An assignment report containing:

1) General Presentation of report & Literature review (10%)

2) Manufacturing design consideration (10%)

3) Selection of materials with their properties, (10%)

4) A line-by-line account, with the calculated figures and values for the connecting rod
(30%)

5) A solidworks parts models. (Print-out). (15%)

6) A solidworks assembly Model (Print-out) where the arrangement of the connecting rod can
be seen with Bill of Materials (BOM) (15%)

7) 2D drawings of the solidworks assembly model with atleast one sectioned view with BOM.
(10%)

Deadline Date: 4 weeks from the date of assignment release (20/03/2017)

Note: Refer the module guide indicative reading for the website for selection of
different components.

4
General Information:

1. Your assignment should be submitted in MS word A4 document folder.

2. The work must be neat and tidy and have all the sheets numbered and MUST contain
the following:
Assignment Feedback sheet and the Assignment front sheet.
3. Students should familiarise themselves with the Universitys Unfair Means Regulations,
especially collusion, which are available in the handbook. This is an individual
assignment. The work submitted in your report must be the results of your own
effort. Signs of students working together will be investigated.
4. The use of Microsoft Word in the production of the report is encouraged.
5. The completed assignment must be submitted for marking on or before the submission
deadline, otherwise the marking will be penalised according to University regulations.
