UNEMPLOYMENT CASE !2

Unemployment Case Study

Issue: Unemployment rates have increased in Ontario as the number of social assistant

recipients have escalated.

Background: Unemployment rates have increased in Ontario as the homelessness among

sole support parents and child poverty are mounting. If social assistance policies do not change

then it could lead to a decrease in government revenues and heighten recession.

Option 1: Enhance, expand, and change social assistance policies.

Pros- Unemployment rates and social assistance costs will decrease.

Cons- The whole process can be time consuming and complexed.

Option 2: Bring no change to the social assistance policies.

Pros- With no change to the policies it will save time and effort.

Cons- Recession will regress and social assistance recipients will continue accumulating.

Options 3: Create more jobs focusing on helping sole support parents and the youth.

Pros- Social assistant recipients will minimize and homelessness problem will be tackled.

Cons- More costly and less beneficial to individuals other than sole support parents and

the youth.

Recommendation: Option 1 is the best choice as this way it will keep the unemployment

rates in control and social assistance costs will be cut down minimally.
