Social work is an academic discipline and profession wherein trained professionals promote
positive social change, development, cohesion, and empowerment of different individuals and
communities. These individuals are devoted to helping vulnerable people and communities in their
everyday challenges by providing support. They take note of both internal and external struggles by
identifying the individual’s problems to determine their skills and capacities which will help them
overcome the identified problems. Social workers are found in different areas and are actively
participating in social reforms, they are found in public agencies, non-profit organizations, private
businesses, hospitals, schools, nursing homes, police departments, courts, prisons, and in private
practice.

III. Answer the situation below

Anna Maria is a newcomer at the senior high school program of Santa Barbara College. Being new to
the school, she is observed to be silent and avoids interaction in groups very often. Three month after,
the situation remains the same as she still finds difficulty building relationships. She prefers to eat, to
study, and walk alone. Bothered by the situation of Anna Maia, her adviser in class referred the case to
the school’s social worker

If you are the social worker, how will you handle the case? What core values and principles are you
going to apply? How will you manage the situation? Write your answer below

As a social worker, I will do my best to identify the potential problems regarding why Anna
Maria has developed this certain behavior that makes her isolate herself. The core values that I must
possess is the right to self fulfilment in finding ways to help Anna Maria in her situation. I must push
myself towards the goal of finding a solution for her. I will evaluate her environment, her attitude, and
experiences in hopes of finding the root of her problem. Then, depending on her problem, I will refer
her to a counselor who will hopefully help me find effective implementations for Anna and help
facilitate Anna's efforts and progress. As a social worker, I will accept Anna's views and try my best to
encourage her in improving since it is one of the principles of social work. I will maintain utmost
confidentiality unless Anna is exposed to harm. I will find programs that will suit her situation and

encourage individualization. I will manage this situation with full effort, awareness, and by following
the ethical procedures as well as the core values and principles of social work.

IV. Research on different programs of the DSWD. Get a brief description of the programs and classify it
as to Primary, Equal partner and Secondary Discipline

1. Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) - Primary Discipline

- is a national government human development initiative that gives conditional cash grants to
poor families to enhance their health, nutrition, and educational opportunities for children ages
0 to 18. It is a primary discipline because it involves providing income maintenance as a way to
help their families.

2. Social Pension for Indigent Senior Citizens - Primary Discipline

- This provides a monthly stipend for poor Filipinos over the age of 60 who need assistance. This
will help them meet their basic needs like food, shelter, clothing, and medicine. It is a primary
discipline because they offer financial assistance for the elderly.

3. Supplementary Feeding Program - Secondary Discipline

- This provides child development centers in public school wherein children enrolled in public
elementary and secondary schools are provided with two meals a day. Social workers
implement this to supplement the children’s nutritional intake as well as improve their overall
health. This is from the secondary discipline because the DSWD is providing support in schools
to help children.

4. Bangsamoro Umpungan sa Nutrisyon (BangUn Project) - Equal Partner

- A comprehensive community-based and culturally-responsive convergence of services that
address the high incidence of hunger and malnutrition among children in Bangsamaro
Autonomous region in Muslim Mindanao. This is an equal partner because it aims to build
resilient communities by providing services such as check-up, micronutrient supplementation,
and different types of advocacy programs and seminars promoting community development.

Additional Activity

V. Choose a real life-situation in the society wherein an individual, a group or a community went
through difficult situations that needed the collaboration and services of practitioners in social work.
Document their experience and how social work services addressed their needs.

SELF-ASSESSMENT

What stereotypes of social work was clarified by our discussion? Explain below
Social work is often exposed to a lot of stereotypes and misconceptions which is why
people often underestimate the work that social workers do. One of the major stereotypes is
that people often relate it only with charity, when in reality it is actually a diverse profession
wherein social workers have various roles in addressing different social issues. People also fail
to realize that social work is a profession and not just volunteer work. A lot of people
disregard the amount of skills, dediication, and education that is required for a person to
become a social worker. It is important to realize that social work is an essential part of our
community since it helps individuals, groups, and communities in various ways.
