ABSTRACT

The penetration of renewable energy, such as photovoltaic and wind energy will have
an impact on the grid structure and may cause grid stability problems. Distributed ESSs
(Energy Storage Systems) in combination with advanced power electronics provides a
solution for such problems. For these reasons the importance of UPS (Uninterrupted Power
Supplies) and ESSs will increase in the near future. Commercially available ESSs beyond
lead acid batteries offer alternatives for UPS and can introduce Energy Management at the
consumer level. With this background a technical and economic evaluation is given on the
options for ESSs with respect to the most important requirements for UPS and Energy
Management at consumer level. The evaluated emerging ESSs include flywheels and
supercapacitors for short time power and flow batteries, advanced batteries and systems
based on compressed air for longer periods as alternatives to lead acid batteries.
