Lesson Outline/Procedures: Instructor Notes:
Invite students to brainstorm why keyboarding is an
important skill to master. Prompt them to think about the
many ways we use keyboards in our daily lives.
Invite the two volunteers (see Preparation) to two Make this fun by having the
different computers. One student models the proper volunteer exaggerate bad
position for typing: eyes level with monitor, wrists flat, positioning: crouch over
fingers curved, both feet flat on the floor, back straight, keyboard so not eye level
and fingers on the home row position (left hand fingers with monitor, one foot
on the letters A S D F; right hand fingers on the letters J K tucked under the other leg
L ;). The other student is to model incorrect typing on the chair, wrists tilted
posture and hand/finger positioning. up, fingers on the wrong
keys, etc.
Display an image of a keyboard on the whiteboard. http://www.typing-lessons.
Superimpose your hands on the keyboard with your org/lesson_1.html
fingers in the correct positioning on the home row saying
aloud where each pair of fingers are placed as follows:
pinkies on A/; (Thursday)
ring fingers on S/L (Wednesday)
middle fingers on D/K (Tuesday)
index fingers on F/J (Monday)
index fingers on G/H (Monday)
thumbs on spacebar (Monday)

Students are to model the same at their individual

computers and keyboards. Ask students if they can guess
why the letters F and J have raised bumps on them. If no
one knows, explain that the bumps help them find the
correct home row positions without having to look down
at the keyboard. TTW introduce two keys per day.

Complete the copy alphabetic keyboard. Look at the https://mde.instructure.co

drawing carefully. On the second page, tell which fingers m/courses/9320/files/414
are used to key the indicated item for home row only (we 2265/download?wrap=1
will complete the others as we learn the keys of keyboard).

Summary

Evaluation

Teacher will monitor how students replicate her examples and directions.
Kahoot!
Formal Assessment:
Complete a timed- writing in Micro Type - Home row keys. As soon as you complete a
timed writing with at least 30 words a minute correctly typed, I will mark you complete
with this assignment. Be sure to print your timing indicating this achievement and give
to me for filing in your competency folder. Type in the text entry box for this
assignment, "I DID IT!"
Lesson Extension
Extension/Enrichment:
Have students draw around their hands on a piece of paper and then write the
corresponding key letters, numbers, or symbols on each finger.
Accommodations/Differentiation:
