FEATURES (1) A single-chip microcomputer is used, for high-performance, stable operation. (2) An automatic zero-point adjustment system that allows no fluctuation in zero point against change in temperature and aging is introduced for maintenance free operation. (3) The phototube comprising LED (Light Emitting Diode) and Si photocell is highly sensitive, durable, and vibration resistant. (4) The easy-to-read mist indicator shows the oil mist density with 16 LEDs in 3 colors. Alarm is output in 2 stages (slight and final alarms). (6) A stepping motor is used for the rotary valve, for earlier alarming, since the points not to detect are skipped. (6) A self-diagnosis function is installed, for higher reliability and easier mainte- nance. 3. OPERATION 1) Mist indicator (1) The LED lamp light passed through the oil mist in the phototube is converted into the voltage proportional to the luminous energy by the light sensing element, Si photocell (2) The voltage is input into the CPU board, then shown by the mist indicator after amplification, A/D conversion, then calculation. 2) RUN lamp. Installed at the upper right hand of the power supply switch. The lamp lights up to show that the CPU is in normal operation (see Fig. 14 on p.18). 3) Automatic zero point adjustment (1) The automatic zero point adjusting function is installed to prevent fluctua- tions in indication by the mist indicator LEDs against phototube shield glass contamination through aging and temperature characteristics of the photocell and LED lamp. (2) The mist indicator is automatically corrected to indicate zero (0) by stopping the rotary valve at the port zero and sucking fresh air into the phototube (for 4 seconds). (3) Automatic zero point adjustment is held: @ Immediately alter switching on the power supply, © Immediately after starting the TEST mode, or @ Every set period of time. Immediately after switching on the power supply, automatic zero point adjustment is held every 6 revolutions of the rotary valve before ending 60 revolutions, then every 50 revolutions. Caution) The rotary valve rotates while skipping port zero except automatic zero point adjustment held every set period of time. 4) Alarms (1) Number of mist indicator LEDs to light when the indicator lamp and output relay are operated and reset : : Operation’ Reset a _ Slight alarm 10 or more B or less 15 RESET button Final alarm After 0.5 sec. (after mist density {self-holding) reduction) (2) Since the rotary valve indicator stops when the final alarm has operated, the crankcase No. in trouble can be traced. When overhauling any crankcase, also check the ports before and after the stopped port. (3) Reset the final alarm with the RESET button although the alarm is a self-holding type. 5) Troubles (1) When the self-diagnosis function has detected any trouble in the phototube LED lamp or photocell characteristics, trouble in rotary valve revolution, or control power supply voltage drop, the trouble output relay operates and trouble indicator lamp lights up. (2) Since the LED lamp and power supply inidcator lamp go out and only one of mist indicator LEDs (1 ~ 3) flickers when any trouble has been détecied, the part in trouble can be traced. (8) Troubles cannot be reset with the RESET button. Switch off the power supply, then eliminate the trouble causes. For the details, see section 13 (Troubleshooting). 6) Test mode The mist indicator LED function and whether the slight and final alarm lamps light up can be checked in the test mode. In the test mode, however, the alarm output relay does not operate. (1) Press the TEST button. (2) The rotary valve indicator turns to stop at port zero. Then the solenoid valve is excited to flow fresh air into the phototube. (3) Approx. 4 seconds after, the power supply indicator lamp flickers to indicate that operation is in the test mode. (4) Under such a condition, the mist indicator LEDs light upward as the attached filter (NDO.1, permeability 80%) is installed before the LED lamp at the right end of phototube or the lamp light is gradually blocked with paper or the like. (5) Pay attention to the fact that before pressing the TEST button to flicker the power supply indicator lamp, the mist indicator LEDs do not light upward ‘even though the LED lamp light is blocked. In such a case, press the TEST button again to restore usual operation, then newly press the TEST button to take steps above. (6) When the mist indicator indicates 10, the slight alarm lamp lights up, and 15, the final alarm lamp 0.5 seconds after. (7) After ending testing, press the TEST button again. The power supply indicator lamp keeps lighting, solenoid valve is de- gaussed, and usual operation can restarts. (8) The test mode is automatically reset to usual operation in 10 minutes. Caution) Since the alarm output relay operation cannot be checked in the test mode, to chock the operation, slowly light upward the mist indicator LEDs from the bottom by gradually blocking the LED lamp light. The slight alarm output relay operates when the mist indicator LED lighting has reached level 10, and final alarm one, level 15. If light blocking is too fast, the trouble output relay may operate first, hindering the alarm output relay from operating. In such a case, turn off then on the power supply switch to check the alarm output ralay operation. When the engine is in running, detach external output or take necessary other steps to prevent tripping. 6. INSTALLATION (1) Use the detector under the environmental conditions satisfying the specifi- cations. (2) Install the unit by using bolts M10 or the equivalent, while referring to the dimensions shown in Fig. 7. (3) Since the isolation rubber block bottoms are notched, the unit can be removed just by loosening the set bolts. (4) Secure at least 150 mm wide disassembly space behind the detector. PIPING 1) Mist inlet piping (Fig. 8 and 9) (1) Install a downward elbow and other parts in the crankcase. ‘A large amount of oil may splash around the mist outlet in the crankcase, clogging the mist passage. Rotation of the crankshaft or balance weight may generate air current that hinders mist suction (2) Connect the shortest possible length under 15 m of mist suction piping from each crankcase. (8) Connact the piping with 2~5 of rising inclination. (4) Use copper or steel (0D19~21.7 (15A)) piping. INITIAL ADJUSTMENT Perform the following initial adjustment on the indicator panel found at the center by removing the detector front cover as shown in Fig. 14: 1) PORT NO. set switch (1) Set the PORT NO. switch at the number of ports to use. (2) Check that the rotary valve skips unused ports. (8) After setting the PORT NO. set switch or modifying the switch setting, switch off then on the power supply. 2) Gain (sensitivity) adjustment (1) The diesel engine oil mist density greatly varies depending on the model and running conditions. So adjust the sensitivity to usually output the final alarm at such mist densities as 3~ § times the maximum density (mist density under the maximum loading) in normal engine running. (2) Adjust the gain adjusting screw so the mist indicator indicates 2~4 when the engine is under the maximum loading. Turn the gain adjusting screw clockwise to light the mist indicator LEDs up to the elevated ones (to increase the sensitivity), and counterclockwise to light the lower ones (to lower the sensitivity). (2) Since the oil mist density greatly varies depending on the model and running conditions, sensitivity is adjusted based on the maximum mist density in normal operation (8) The detector is designed to detect bearing overheat that causes crank- cases to explode at the earliest possible stage rather than making a warming of the danger of crankcase explosion. Usually, approx. 0.5 ~1% of the lower explosive limit mist density can be So an alarm is output when the mist density has started extra-ordinarily increasing compared with the oil mist density in normal alarmed. operation. 2) Mist density check (1) The rough estimate of each engine oil mist density can be measured from the gain and number of lighted mist indicator LEDs as shown in Fig. 15. (2) In the test mode, the detector sensitivity can be checked with the attached ESTIMATED MIST DENSITY CHECK filter (equivalent to 0.38 mg/L). MAINTENANCE 1) Trouble check (occasional check) (1) Check the oil mist detector body for extraordinary heat generation, vibration and noise. 2) Mist indicator LED lighting check (occasional) (1) Periodically check the relations between the engine load factor and mist indicator LEDs from start-up to normal running. (2) Check the mist indicator to see that an extra-ordinarily large number of LEDs do not light up and the indicator does not keep indicating 0. (3) In any trouble, see section 13 (Troubleshooting). 3) Phototube shield glass cleaning (1) Check the shield glass (glass cap and lens cap) at the both ends of phototube for contamination. To remove the shield glass, see section 14 (Major Part Removal). (2) Wipe up contamination. 4) Alarm check (every 6 months) (1) Check the alarm output relay operation by referring to paragraph 6) Test mode of section 5 on p.8. (2) The final alarm operates and holds operation after 0.5 seconds of time limit to prevent mistaken alarming caused by instantaenous power supply shutoff. 5) Trouble check (every 6 months) (1) The trouble lamp and trouble output relay can be checked by suddenly intercepting with a hand the light from the LED lamp at the right end of photo-tube so a trouble can be detected. (2) The trouble is held but can be reset by switching off the power supply. 6) Other check and maintenance (1) Check the blower and stepping motor rotation, vibration and noise, as well as each screws for loosening every 6 months. Also check the blower parts for oil leakage. (2) The LED lamp life varies depending on the operation environment (temperature and humidity). Replace the lamps with new ones every approx. 2 years. = 20 (8) The phototube shield glass prevents contamination with oil mist by using the negative pressure of blower. So, be sure to keep the power supply switched on during engine running, (4) It is recommendable to have the unit undergo periodical check every 2 years. (6) To store the detector, choose the place with care. Particularly, to store the unit for a long period of time or during construction works, shut off water by covering the entire body with a vinyl sheet or the like, (6) For operation of the detector when the engine is in running, which may Operate the alarm and trip the engine, detach external output and take necessary other steps. a 13.
