Counsell of Smart Systems Ltd, Arnolds Way, Yatton, North Somerset, BS49 4UN, BRE issued proposal number 121424 on November 2007. The proposal was accepted on December and BRE tested a specimen window on 13 December 2007. The tests based on methods in BS EN 13049: 2003" measure resistance of the specimen window to soft, heavy body impacts, In this case the impacts were performed on the indoor surfaces to study the affects of them on the infil (the glass) and the glass retention system (the glazing beads) The tests on the specimen window were carried out under the BRE Standard Terms and Conditions of Business as BRE Job number 241681 in project number CV2161 “Test report number 241681 (© Building Research Establishment Lid 2007 Commercial in confidence Page Sof 11 Be ake ahaha hake ell icin aha, a Impact resistance tests on a Smart Systems Ltd window with one opening and fa one fixed light 2 Details of tests carried out and classification details The impact resistance tests were carried out to the requirements of BS EN 13049: 2003 Windows ~ Soft and heavy body impact — Test method, safety requirements and classification. This standard uses a 60 kg, double-tyre impactor as described in BS EN 12600 Glass in building - Pendulum test - impact test method and classification for flat glass* The tyres on the impactor are inflated to a pressure of 0.35 +0.02 Mpa, about 60 PSI. The impactor is drawn back to drop heights that give theoretical impact energies when the impactor is released to strike the specimen. Impacts are performed normal to the plane of the specimen. Impact energies are calculated from Impact energy = drop height (m) x weight of the impactor (N) E.g. Impact energy = 0.95 x 490.5 = 466 Nm (joules) BS EN 13049 Requirements for windows: 4. Any opening shall not allow the ellipsoid (gauge) to pass 2. The impact shail not detach or dislodge any casement or sash of the test specimen nor disconnect any hardware or infill retaining components, nor shall any of its composite parts become dislodged or shattered in a dangerous manner. 3. The mass of any dislodged part shall not exceed 50 grams Classification: To qualify for a particular class the requirements above shall be met. Classes for windows run from Class 1 with a drop height of 200 mm, Class 2 at 300 mm, Ciass 3 at 450 mm, Class 4 at 700 mm and Class 5 at 950 mm, In this case only the maximum drop height of 950 mm (Class 5) was used. Notes: All the impacts were carried out on the indoor face of the same specimen; this should be considered when reading the results est report number 241681 {© Building Research Establishment Lis 2007 Commercial in confidence Page 4of 11 Impact resistance tests on a Smart Systems Ltd window with one opening and one fixed light 3. Test specimen For these tests Futuremost Ltd supplied the test specimen from Smart Systems Ltd range of windows. The general details about the test specimen are given below and in drawings to the rear of this report: Type: ‘Aluminium frame members with an outward opening light above a smaller fixed light. Reference: Smart Systems Ltd 1915 mm high x 700 mm wide window. Glazing: The lights are both glazed from the outdoor face with insulating glass units with 6.4 laminated glass and a 15 mm air gap. Aluminium beads, on the outdoor face of the window, retain the glazing seals and the glazing. Seals: There are weather seals on the opening light frame, the window frame and around the glazing, Hardware: The opening light is hung on SP stainless stee! variable geometry friction stays. A single, lockable operating handle operates the sash and three espagnolette type locking bolts. The locking points are at 100, 350 and 925 mm down from the internal corner of the window frame. For these tests the specimen window was fixed into a wood surround frame with screws at 400 mm centres and at least 160 mm in from the corners. 4 Test rig and preparatory procedures ‘The test specimen was conditioned for at least 4 hours within temperature and humidity ranges specified in the test standards of 10°C to 30°C and 25% to 75% RH respectively, The window was mounted in the BRE test rig with its indoor face facing the impactor. For these tests the bottom timber of the sub frame surrounding the window was fixed with screws to the test rig. The impactor position was adjusted so that at rest i lightly brushed against the specimen at the required point of impact. The impactor was drawn back to the desired drop height and released to swing against the specimen. ‘Secondary impacts were restrained by hand. The specimen was examined closely after each impact and findings noted.
