Figurative Language in Poetry

Content objective: The students will examine and use textual
support to identify figurative language in poems.
Language objective: Students will be able to read poems, and
orally defend their reasoning behind figurative language
analysis. Then discuss their findings as a class.
Words to Know
Imagery- the use of sensory words that describe something
Onomatopia- words that imitate what they sound.
Alliteration- words with a repetition of sound
Simile- comparing two things using like or as
Metaphor- comparing two things without using like or as
Hyperbole- an obvious exaggeration
Personification- something that is not human but is given
human characteristics

Poetry is often considered an outdated art. But, like we
discussed, it is more relevant and can be found more than we
think.
