Example on Two Way Eccentricity

A square foundation is shown below with eL = 0.3m and eB = 0.15m. Determine the ultimate load,
Qult.

Solution:

Using the Figure below for the above value, we have:

Use Design Approach 1/2

1
8 ; L1 = (0.85)(1.5) = 1.275m

And
2

; L2 = (0.21)(1.5) = 0.315m

Since

1 + 2

7 + 9 2

1 7

9
9 6
1 7

For c = 0

For tan = 0.577, des. = 0.577/ = 0.577/1.25

= 0.4616 = 25o. Gives Nq = 10.8 and N = 6.8, Thus

Base from EC7:

sq = + = 1 + 0.734 (0.422) = 1.31

s =
= 1 (0.3)(0.734) = 0.78

qf = (18 x 0.7) x 10.8 x 1.31 + 0.5 x 18 x 0.936 x 0.78

= 178.26 + 6.57 = 184.83 kN/m2

R = Aqf = 220kN.
