Lately, with the melting of
the snow and ice and the
warming temperatures of
spring, Atticus and I have
been getting out more fre-

things about living in these

This afternoon a butterfly
bumped unto me. I was
kneeling, head bowed, fin-
gers working through
moist dirt as I pulled
weeds. My eyes moved
from each tuft of grass and
encroaching weed to the
next, leading my hands
where to go . I was intense-
ly focused on the ground
directly beneath me, even
as my thoughts wandered
from this to that and back
again. Of all things great
and small, between the task
at hand and the meander-
ing of my mind, I was

my head, and I sat
upright. It, perhaps mis-
calculating for my sudden
movement - or, perhaps
comfortable with a little
contact - bumped against
my cheek. It was a delicate
yet resounding sensation
that lingered after the but-
terfly's departure. I can
still recall it just below the
ridge of my cheekbone.
Filling but a fraction of a
second, the encounter
pulled me simultaneously
away from the weeds that
held my attention and out
of the routine reverie in my
minds ether of plans, to-
dreams. From both the
immediate and the unde-
fined I was returned to the
moment, fully, all my sens-
es and perceptions back
into my body. No thought
jumped ahead, no faculty
was ignored as a conse-
quence of mundane con-
centration. As my cheek
absorbed the touch of the
butterfly wing, so, too, did
my eyes note the blue sky
and cotton ball clouds; so,
too, did my neck tingle with
the faint breeze and my
shoulders warm with the
intense sun. The chatter of
birds landed in my ears,
and my fingers stretched as
moist soil caked against my
skin.
For some brief seconds,
reality ruled. My body per-
ceived itself, and appreciat-
ed the perception. It was
sharp. Focused, without
focusing. And it dissipated
fluttered away to its next
destination.
Some hours later, I sat
inside the cabin at
dusk. Ryan and I had just
weeded and watered the
greenhouse, and were shar-
ing an anodyne glass of
water as we relished the
end of the day's
labors. Looking through
the northwestern window,
two pine tree stumps are
visible; a third lays just out
of sight by the green-
house. Recalling the but-
terfly encounter, the
stumps struck me as anoth-
er piece highlighting the
potency of reality. These
stumps keep us in the
moment, too, even as they
suggest a long history. The
trees they once rooted to
the earth were felled to
make our clearing and our
cabin; the seeds that creat-
ed the trees likely were
homestead was aban-
doned, before WWII. The
stumps, dead, but still far
from decayed, sit amongst
our garden and grounds,
holding rock piles and
providing a safe haven for
long grass roots to defy my
weeding tools. They offer
a long-term awareness
where the butterfly prof-
fered a momentary eye-
opener. These stumps
stand as a memoir of what
was, what is, and a sugges-
tion of what could be. As
they slowly decompose
and release hard-won
nutrients stored in roots
and wood fibers, they feed
the life that secedes their
own death. And from
those flowers, the butter-
flies are nurtured.
Thanks to an intrepid but-
terfly and resilient stumps,
this day, this hour, I am
keenly aware of my own
