About Bokaro District

Bokaro district is a district of Jharkhand state with its administrative headquarters


located at Bokaro city. Its district headquarters is also popularly known as Steel City.
Earlier, there was a village in the Bokaro city called Maraphari, situated in the dark
jungles of Chota Nagpur. There was a group of villages in the nearby area, named Chas.
During the ancient period, Purulia, a nearby town of the district was ruled by the
Maharaja of Kashipur. According to the natives of the district, after defeating the Veer
Man Singh the area came under the rule of Mughal. For the very reason, the place was
named after Man Bhoom after him. For first time this remote place came into limelight
only when Jawaharlal Nehru with the help of the Soviets designed to make the first
Swadeshi steel plant. The steel plant was established as a limited company on 24th
January, 1964. After sometime it was merged with Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL)
and at last came to be known as Bokaro Steel Limited (BSL). At present Bokaro is
emerged as the centre for intellectuals. The culture of Bokaro is mixed in nature since it
has the population from different parts of India. Bokaro as a separate district came into
existence in the year 1999.
Geographically, the district lies at 2369'N latitude, 8611'E longitude and 210 m altitude
. The district encompasses a geographical area of 2,883 sq km and it is bounded by
Giridih district and Hazaribagh district on the North , West Bengal on the South, Dhanbad
district on the East and Ramgarh district on the West. Number of valleys and sub-valleys
in the district are formed by the mighty River Damodar and also by its tributaries. The
climate of the district remains extremely hot and humid in the summers and fair cold in
the winters. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the
district was 981.8 mm in the year of 2015-16.
Administration wise, the district is divided into 9 blocks namely Bermo, Chas,
Chandankiyari, Chandrapura, Gomia, Jaridih, Kasmar, Nawadih and Petarwar. Moreover, it
comprises 9 sub-districts, 27 towns and 635 villages. The administrative language in the
district is Hindi. There are 2 parliamentary and 4 assembly constituencies in the district.
According to 2011 census the district has a population of 20,62,330 including 10,72,807
are males and 9,89,523 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 922 (females for
every 1000 males). In the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was
16.01% out of which 14.32% are males and 17.91% are females. The major religions in
the district are Hindu and Muslim with 79.35% and 11.71% of the total population
respectively . The population density in the district is 715 (persons per sq. km.). As per
2001 the principal languages in the district are Hindi, Santali and Bengali with 69.10%,
10.78% and 10.26%.
The economy of the district is mainly dependent on industries. Bokaro Steel Plant ,
located in the Bokaro district is one of the large steel plants, controlled by the Steel
Authority of India Limited. Electro steel Castings Limited in Chandankiyari is located at a
distance of 15 km from the city which is expected to start their production recently.
Bokaro Power Supply Corporation Private Limited located near to the Bokaro Steel Plant
(BSL) has an aggregate installed capacity to generate 302MW of power besides 660
Tonne per Hour (TPH) of steam. Every year a huge chunk of revenue comes from the
agricultural products in the district helps in its economy to a great extent. Some time its
population are engaged in agriculture in order to earn their livelihood. The chief
agricultural products in the district are wheat, sugarcane, oilseeds, etc. The adoption of
the new agricultural technologies amongst the famers of the district helps to increase
the production of various agricultural items. In the year 2008-2009 the Gross Domestic
Product in the district was Rs 5,83,699 lakh at current price and N et Domestic Product
in the district was Rs 4,93,365 lakh at current price.

The district is well known as an abode of several reputed educational institutions. It


provides a platform for higher education. Some of its most recognised educational
institutions are Imamul Hai Khan Law College, Indian School of Information and
Technology, RAO IAS, Krishna Ballabh College, Bokaro Steel City College, Panchayat
College, DVC Inter College, Vishthapit College and many more. As per 2011 census the
literacy rate in the district is 72.01% including 82.51% are males and 60.63% are
females. The literate population in the district is 12,73,520 out of which 7,59,088 are
males and 5,14,432 are Females.
The district has several centres of attraction which allures many travellers from different
parts of the country as well as world. Bokaro Steel Plant, one of the largest and oldest
steel mills in the country was once considered to be the largest steel plant of Asia. It is
also famous for its flat products and in the coming days it has planned to produce more
major flat products in India. Garga Dam is around 12 km from the city centre, near the
railway station on the NH-23. It is a picnic spot for the citizens of Bokaro. Garga Dam ,
located in the district is bounded by natural mesmerising sceneries and a huge variety of
aquatic habitat. It is constructed for the use of the steel plants as well as irrigation
purpose for the people. Parasnath Hills are a range of hills in Giridih district of Jharkhand.
The highest peak is 1350 metres. Parasnath hills in the place are considered to as Shri
Sammet Shikhar Teerth ( Shikharji). As per Jainism it is one of the two most renowned
Jain pilgrimage centres and another one is Shetrunjaya, situated in the state of Gujarat.
The hill got its name from Parasnath, the 23rd Tirthankara. Rajrappa, a place situated on
the bank of the confluence of the rivers Bhairavi and Damodar is famous for the
'Chinnamasta Temple'. The place is derived its name from the temple known as 'Rajrappa
Mandir', situated at a distance of 60 km from the Bokaro Steel City. Some other notable
places of interest in the district are Bokaro Ispat Pustakalaya, City Centre, Jagannath
Temple, Aaiyappa Mandir, Buddha Vihar, Gayatri Mandir, Ram Mandir, Kali Bari, Sai Baba
Sansthan, City Park, Jawaharlal Nehru Biological Park, Chas, Chira Chas, Pupunki Ashram
and many more.
Mannara Chopra , an eminent Indian film actress and model who predominantly works in
Hindi and Telugu films was born on 29 rd March, 1991 at Bokaro in the Jharkhand district .
She is the cousin of most famous actress, Priyanka Chopra. She made her Bollywood
debut with the film Zid in 2014. Imran Zahid, an illustrious Indian actor who has acted in
numder of theatre s and Bollywood films was born on 1st January, 1982 at Bokaro Steel
City . His latest play was 'Daddy' based on Mahesh Bhatt's movie 'Daddy' released in
1989.
