About Bilaspur District

Bilaspur is a district of Himachal Pradesh state with its administrative headquarters


located at Bilaspur town. Earlier, the present days Bilaspur district was a part of a
princely state of British India called Kahlur. During different periods of time the place was
ruled by different rulers among whom the Chandela Rajputs dynasty was the significant
one. The town of Bilaspur was established in the year 1663. In 1932 state came under
the newly formed States Agency of Punjab. After India got its independence in the year
1947, the ruler of the place of that time named HH Raja Sir Anand Chand handed over it
to the Government of India on 12 October 1948 the ruler and then Bilaspur became an
Indian state under a chief commissioner . Finally, the state of Bilaspur was merged with
Himachal Pradesh and emerged as a district on the map of Himachal Pradesh state on 1st
July 1954. On the other hand, Bilaspur, the historic town was submerged in 1954 when
the Sutlej River was dammed to create the Govind Sagar and in this way a new town
was constructed upslope of the old one .
Geographically, the district lies at 3135'N latitude and 7676'E longitude. The altitude of
the district is 673 m. The district encompasses a geographical area of 1,167 sq km and it
is bounded by Hamirpur district on the North, Una district on the North West, Punjab on
the South West, Solan district on the South East, Mandi district on the East and Una
district on the West. Since it is located in the valley at lower altitude hence its natives
experience extreme hot in the summer . Whereas due to the surrounding mountains top
its climate remain pleasant and fairly cold in the winter. Most of its rainfall occurs in the
monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 1087.3 mm in the year of 2015-
16.
Administration wise, the district is divided into 6 sub-districts namely Bharari, Bilaspur
sadar, Ghumarwin, Jhanduta, Nainadevi and Namhol. Moreover it comprises 4 towns and
1,061 villages. The administrative language in the district is Hindi.
According to 2011 census the district has a population of 3,81,956 persons out of which
1,92,764 are males and 1,89,192 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 981
(females for every 1000 males). In the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the
district was 12.05% including 12.55% were males and 11.54% were females. The major
religion in the district is Hindu with 97.39% of the total population. The population
density in the district is 327 (persons per sq km). As per 2001 census the principal
languages in the district are Punjabi and Hindi with 54.57% and 44.68% respectively.
Agriculture is the backbone of the economy of the district. Most of the lands in the
district are use for agricultural purposes. More than half of its populations are engaged in
agriculture in order to earn their livelihood. The chief agricultural products in the district
are maize, rice, wheat, sugarcane, mustard, gram, ginger, etc. The adoption of the new
agricultural technologies amongst the farmers of the district helps to increase the
production of various agricultural items. Every year a huge chunk of revenue comes from
the agricultural products in the district helps in its economy to a great extent. In terms
of industrial sector, the district has only a few cement factories out of these cement
factories ACC cement factory is the prominent one. In the year 2005-2006 the gross
domestic product in the district was Rs 1,44,199 lakh at current price.

The district is well known as an abode of several reputed educational institutions. It


provides a platform for higher education. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the
district is 84.59% including 91.16% are males and 77.97% are females. The literates in
the district are 2,87,620 including 1,55,599 are males and 1,32,021 are females.
Suresh Chandel, an eminent Indian politician and a member of the 12th, 13th and 14th Lok
Sabha representing the Hamirpur constituency of Himachal Pradesh was born on 19th
March, 1960 at Bilaspur town . He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
The district has several centers of attraction which allures many travelers from different
parts of the country as well as world. The Temple of Shri Naina Devi , situated on a
hilltop in the Bilaspur district is closely associated with a great mythological story. As per
the belief of a legend, after the Goddess Sati burnt herself alive in Yagna, Lord Shiva
became depressed and picked the corpse of Sati on his shoulder , then started to dance
Tandava. For this very reason Lord Vishnu unleash his Chakra which cut the Satis body
into 51 pieces. And Shri Naina Devi Temple is the place where her eyes fell down. Vyaas
Gufa, the oldest and the most renowned religious place situated on the left bank of
Sutlej River. Natives of the district believe that Rishi Vyas of Mahabharata era lived in
this Gufa in penance. Markandey temple, located at a distance of 20 km from Bilaspur is
named after Rishi Markandey. Pilgrims from far distance place come to this temple in
order to offer their prayers. Some other important places of interest in the district are
Bandla Hills, Bhakar Dam, Nahar Singh Dhaulra, Baba Balak Nath, Badol Devi Temple,
Gugga Gehrwin Temple, Kandrour Bridge and many more.
Naib Subedar Sanjay Kumar, an illustrious Indian Army soldier, a Junior Commissioned
Offic er was born on 3rd March, 1976 at Kalol Bakain in the Bilaspur district . The
Government of India honored him with the highest military award, Param Vir Chakra.
