Ahmadabad District District Factbook
Ahmadabad district is in the central part of the Gujarat. It is the seventh largest city
and seventh most populous district in India. By 1960, Ahmadabad had become a
metropolis with a population of slightly fewer than half a million people. On 1 May 1960
after the partition of the state of Bombay, it was selected as the capital of Gujarat.
During that period, a large number of educational and research institutions were build up
in the city, making it a centre of higher education, science and technology. But in the
late 1970s, the capital shifted to the newly built, well planned city of Gandhinagar.
Kumudini Lakhia,an eminent Indian Kathak dancer and choreographer was born in 1930 at
Ahmadabad. She was honoured by many great awards--Padma Shri Award by the
Government of India in 1987, the Padma Bhushan in 2010, the Sangeet Natak Akademi
Award in 1982 and Kalidas Samman for the year 2002-2003.
Geographically, the district lies at 23.04N latitude, 72.57E longitude and 53m altitude .
The district encompasses a geographical area of 8,107 sq km and it is bounded by
Mehsana and Gandhinagar districts in the North, Kheda and Anand Districts on the East,
the Gulf of Khambhat (Gulf of Cambay), Botad and Bhavnagar districts on the South, and
Surendranagar district on the West . The climate is extremely dry during all the seasons,
except the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 413.7 mm in the year
of 2015-16.
Administrative wise, the district is divided into 11 tehsils - Ahmadabad, Daskroi, Sanand,
Barwala, Bavla, Dholka, Viramgam, Mandal, Detroj-Rampura, Dhandhuka and Ranpur.
Moreover, it comprises 13 towns and 512 villages. There are 5 Lok Sabha seats and 21
Assembly constituencies in the district.
According to 2011 census the district has a population of 72,14,225 (persons) out of
which 37,88,051 (males) and 34,26,174 (females). The district has a sex ratio of 904
females for every 1000 males. In the year 2001-2011 the population growth of the
district was 24.03 % (persons) including 23.21 % (males) and 24.95 % (females). The
major religions in the district are Hindu and Muslim with 83.76% and 12.24% of the total
population respectively .
Ahmadabad was known as the "Manchester of the East" for its textile industry.
Ahmadabad is the second largest cotton textile centre in India after Mumbai and the
largest in Gujarat. The automobile industries of the district are also contributing in its
economy.The Ahmadabad Stock Exchange , located in the Ambavadi area of the city, is
India's second oldest stock exchange. The district has two biggest pharmaceutical
companies of India --Zydus Cadila andTorrent Pharmaceuticals.

Ratilal Kalidas Varma, a veteran politician and member of the 14 th Lok Sabha of India
was born on 30th June, 1948 in Ahmadabad. He represents the Dhanduka constituency of
Gujarat. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (Political Party).
The district allures numerous travellers from far distance place every year. The Mosque
of Ahmed Shah is located in the south-west end of the famous Bhadra fort. Ahmed
Shah's Mosque is a very ancient mosque, built in 1414 AD by the founder of the
Ahmadabad city, Ahmed Shah. Bhadrakali Temple of the district is situated inside the
famous Bhadra Fort. It is believe that the temple was constructed during the rule of
Aazam Khan. The famous Akshardham Temple is located at Gandhi Nagar. The
Akshardham Temple is dedicated to Lord Swaminarayan, the father of Swaminarayan
Faith. The Victoria Garden is placed at the southern verge of the majestic Bhadra Fort of
the Ahmadabad city. Other two enchanting gardens of the district are The Law Garden
and Bal Vatika. Chandola Lake is situated on the Dani Dalmi Road which serves as a
significant reservoir of Ahmadabad.Kankaria Lake is polygonal in shape with 34 corners;
located on the south-eastern outskirts of Ahmadabad. Some of the well-known wildlife
sanctuaries of the district are Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary , Kamla Nehru Zoological Garden
and Rann of Kutch Desert Wildlife Sanctuary . Uttarayan international kite festival and
navratri are the two distinguished festivals of the district.
