VIEWS ON

TEACHING
Three common views of
what constitutes
teaching

(Miller, 1996)
Teaching as Transmission
Act of transmitting
knowledge from the teacher
to the students

Teacher-centered approach
Supply students with a
designated body of
knowledge in a predetermined
order

Academic achievement is
students ability to
demonstrate, replicate
knowledge
Standardized tests are
considered as an apt measure
of learning

Teaching as Transaction
Constructivism
process of creating
situations whereby students
are able to interact with the
material to be learned to
construct knowledge

Teachers assist learners in

constructing knowledge
Academicachievement is
students ability to use this
knowledge to solve real-
world problems or create
products/performances that
are valued in one or more
cultural settings
Teaching as Transformation
Creating conditions that
have the potential to
transform the learner on
many different levels

Holistic Education
Learning has occurred when
these experiences elicit a
transformation of
consciousness

Academic achievement is
similar to self-actualization
