Departmental Colloquium
Topic: An Introduction to Space Weather.

Presenter: Prof. Mark Moldwin, Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space

Sciences, University of Michigan, USA.

Abstract
Space weather is the emerging field of space science interested in
the societal impacts of the solar-terrestrial relationship. Energy,
mass and momentum from the Sun during solar storms cause
geomagnetic storms in the Earth's space environment that can
damage or destroy satellites, degrade satellite communication and
navigation signals, destroy electric power grids, and injure or kill
astronauts. This tutorial will introduce the solar drivers and
describe the technological impacts of space weather.
Keywords: Space Weather, Solar Storms, Solar-terrestrial.
