ROLE OF CRYOGENICS IN FUELS

Cryogenics is the study of the production and behaviour of materials at very low
temperatures. A person who studies elements that have been subjected to
extremely cold temperatures is called a cryogenicist. The applications of
cryogenics are in various fields. It has been applied in many techniques such as
fuels, food processing, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, Magnetic
Resonance Imaging, electric power transmission, Frozen food, infrared cameras,
blood banking, manufacturing process.

The role of cryogenics in fuels is discussed. Cryogenic fuels are the fuels which
require storage at extremely low temperatures in order to maintain them in liquid
state. Cryogenic fuels play a key role in space science missions. These fuels are
used in space machineries as the ordinary fuels cannot be used in space due to
absence of environment that supports combustion. These cryogenic fuels are most
often liquefied gases. They are used in rocket engines and as well as propellants.

The classification of cryogenic fuels based on combustion, combustion of

cryogenic fuels, advantages and disadvantages are elaborated. The slides on above
topics are displayed and explained.
