A lot of us tend to be reserved, or shy, tostart with and then gravitate to amore confident persona over the years but this takes time! On my part, | had Mahesh Kolar the good fortune of being taught by excellent English teachers who made learning the language fun and exciting, not to mention word building games and so on. My first exposure to Toastmasters happened in the US, while I was transitioning between jobs and got introduced to it at a career foir. seemed likea safe place to hangout witha very similar profile of job aspirants mostly makingup the attendance at the time linked by acommon theme to “ace interviews” and excel in the art of communication. Needless to say, it was a little daunting at first to hear some very good and accomplished speakers dwell on their speeches and learn nuances of time management, punctuation and so forth. came away impressed but other matters took over at the time and itjustremained amemory at the time. What was perhaps some love at first sight turned out to be eventually an affair, that continues till date. The difference this time was the change in locale, culture, and the people making up the clubs here in Bangalore ~ both at a corporate setting and then a community setting as well. Corporate clubs tend to have a set pattern, presumably duc to the underlying influences that make up the culture at the workplace and the topics of discussion at the tea stalls mostly. Community clubs, on the other hand, tend to offer a lot more diversity, and there's always an element of surprise given the mix of the people that make up such clubs. Over the last few years, Toastmasters has continued to occupy a good chunk of my time outside of work given the healthy opportunities it provides for continual improvementin communication, leadership and networking. The founding of Dhwani Toast masters asa community club has been a very gratifying moment, and one that willremain etched in my memory forever as a foundation laid to make a difference not just to my life but that of othersin the community. New friendships have been made, a new purpose appears to have been defined for some and thenit's been the first love for a lot of youas well. Thishasalso become a family thing at homenow, one that will hopefully benefit everyone of us in some form. Granted, wecan do so much more in terms of improving the Toastmaster experience at all levels tomake every session worthwhile - it's ok to err at times and learn from the experiences so as to do things better the next time around. To you, thereader, here's an acknowledgment of your role in being part of a worthy movement that can help channel your energies well. The person sitting over at the last row in the hall, is he able to hear you? Or is he stuck watching a silent movie of a bygone era? Using mikes toois not always the answer. Mikes, even ere collar mikes, tend to restrict your movement. Anc toastmasters, the acrobats that we are, need 360-degrees freedomof movement. A good amplitude of your vocal waves also conveys confidence, exudes energy and commands attention Now what could onedo to improve one's voice projection? Can we look for answers in other disciplines? It turns out that we can, One of the other disciplines where voice projections very important is theatre. A theatre actor needs to be heard. And they seldom get to use amike. How do they then manage? The acoustics of many theatres are custom designed for this purpose - to fence out external noise and to prison in the internal voice. Butan actor toodoes their bit tobe heard, They breathe. Now we all breathe. | agree we do. But, just like a car rushing through a yellow light, we breathe in a hurry. Our inhaled breath barely reaches the upper areas of our lungs and we exhale. In contrast, a theatre actor breathes into their stomach’ (not literally, of course). They breathe deep, and breathe in a way that the breath goes till the bottom of their lungs. The lungs push the diaphragm down. The diaphragm pushes the stomach outwards - and thus the phrase ‘breathing into your stomach! Subsequently, when you exhale, the breath you let out smoothly flows through your throat, strumming your vocal chords en route. The voice that then comes outs effortlessly louder. Obviously, one can’t do it only on stage. One needs to practice it regularly, for this way of breathingto become their second nature. A simple practice exercise could to be Iiedown on your back, and keep a book on your stomach. You can then inhale and exhale to counts of 4, being mindful of lifting the book up with your inhalations. The depth of your breath determines the strength of your voice. Happy breathing! dbrayani TOASTMASTERS (Cb # 04410336 |Distret-92 | Olvision-E IMPRESSIONS March 2017 | Vor6 Chit - Chat with Humour Champion 1. Here is why | think itis one- 1) To stand on stage and hold an audience with your thoughts and words, needs disciplines, articulation and also gifted ability to let influence lives. 2) Like singing or dancing have their basics, Public Speaking also thrives on fundamentals of speech structuring, body language, voice modulation and other facets. Often since there is no concrete bible or rule book laid out universally, the understanding of utilising stage and the various facets we need to learn goes unnoticed. The CC manual in many ways defines the basics. How well you practice andunderstand it, defines your ability to handle stage better, The manual is like an ocean, it can never be mastered. You need tobe a learner for life. 3) Inreality, very movement, very word and very action on stage should have ameaning and purpose- even a pause, aglance or positioning on stage has meaning. A speech adhering to these basicshas the power to be remembered for long and in return sub-consciously influence the lives of the listeners. Hor different from the usual Toastmasters program, and what are the distinct advantages of Lop? Every candidate goes through a process of screening when he/she applies. The selected participants learn specific skillset that will help them transform intoan influential leader. The LDP provides an individual both theory and practical experience. A participant develops various skills such as persuasion, program management, teamwork, negotiation, etc, and goes on to apply these skills in the tasks that are assigned to each of them. In the process, each participant not just becomes aware of where he/she stands as a leader, but also is able to take measurable steps to improve and evolve. 3. Whatis the right time to join LDP? In my opinion, there's nothing called “right time” in Toastmasters. You just have to take up the opportunity that comes your way and see for yourself. However, like I have mentioned earlier, LDP provides leadership training and opportunities for participants to go beyond the club. Hence experience withinthe club and its committee matters s lot! Similarly, in any joint enterprise, leadership, where it isnot imposed by legislation or corporate or military structure, devolves on the person, male or female, who both knows what they are doing and What they wish to achieve and is able to communicate and inspire the Toastmasters2011 World Champion Of PublicSpeaking When, however, there is in fact a formal leader follower structure, there is still the crucial need to know restof the team to follow that natural leader. what is required and to communicate and inspire willing and even enthusiasticteam performance. There isa third possibility: what | call Leadership from Behind, This is where, you for example, have a project or programme you wish to promote, but some other person has the authority, but not the inclination to make your project happen. So the question is, “Why would you want to lead” and following from that, ‘Why would anyone want to follow you? Personal ambition aside, your desire for leadership is generally driven by awish toachieve overall personal oF organisational success and/or specific project targets. For others to follow, demands a structured hierarchy where the others are obliged to follow, as happens in the workplace, or else an acknowledgement of a voluntary hierarchy as happens in your Toastmasters club of any community or volunteer organisation, where, while the President's word is not ‘law’ as such, the authority vested in that person through the democratic process, says that we will follow “orders” at least until they are obviously wrong. But the bottom line is, if the followers don't want to follow, then the orders thet they are given will be followed badly, ifat all, and passive resistance will ensure failure, or at best, only partial success for the organisationor project. dbazani TOASTMASTERS (Cb # 04410336 |Distret-92 | Olvision-E IMPRESSIONS March 2017 | Vor6 Leadership usually involves change and many people are opposed to change, ustially because they are comfortable with what they know and are afraid of the unknown. Additionally, any change will mean that some or all of your team will suffer, or believe that they will suffer or be disadvantaged by the change. First response, therefore, is to resist change. So, how do we overcome this and get your team toembrace change? There are many elements to this: First, define the problem or target. Second, list your possible solutions and strategies...and| mean, all of them, even the mostimprobable. Failure to consider all options, however unlikely is to invite missed opportunities. Both of these elements are essentially Marketingactivities. Your team members or end users know what the problemis, so ask them. That makes them feel part of the team. Ask them next, what they see as the Possible solutions orstrategies. After all, they are both the victims of the problemand the likely beneficiaries of any solution. But with any change, there will be a downside, especially in implementation. So identify that too. One of the major downsides, other than possible financial costs is the likely impact on personal boundaries, territoriality and jobsecurity. Now we come to application. If everyone know what the problemor target is and has input into the solution and strategies, then they have part ownership of the project, which gives thema vested interest in making it all happen. For those who will be directly affected and who feel most threatened, then they must be n. The most reassured and coping strategies devised to ease their transi portant of these strategies is to acknowledge their personal importance, that they will be affected to a greater or lesser degree. But that at the end, they will be ina better position, with amore effective role and job function than they had before. There will problems in implementation but with awillteam, they will tackle it as a team, overcome it asa team and whether you wear the leadership hat or not, you will have led your team or organisation towards a more happy and successful future. It's easy to see that these speaking opportunities are indeed priceless, dbrayani TOASTMASTERS (Cb # 04410336 |Distret-92 | Olvision-E IMPRESSIONS March 2017 | Vor6 From Talking to Speaking | could talk nonstop and was able to talk on anything at a drop of ahat. How | loved listening to my own voice! At one time | realized that some listened out of courtesy, some tried to hide their yawning and some conveniently switched off or put the sound of my voice inmute. Rese] Though my studentshad no option but to listen to me, at times | had the feeling that I was talking to the walls of the class room! twas then one memorable day, | walked into the Toastmasters meeting at Dhwant. | was mesmerized by the talks that were going on. They called them speeches! On my second visit to the meeting | was invited to participate in the Table Topics. | don'tremember what | spoke, but | was taken back the applauses that | received. (Later | came to know that they clap to all those talk or speak). The raom full of people and those clapping decided for me to become a proud member at Dhwani Toastmasters. it was then learnt the difference between talking and speaking, Theverbs speak and talk both generally means 'say words, but there are some small differences in how they areused. Speakis more formal than talk... We usually use speak for more formal presentations and lectures, and talk for more informal ones. Oh! How I love speaking!!! dbazani TOASTMASTERS (Cb # 04410336 |Distret-92 | Olvision-E IMPRESSIONS March 2017| Vor6 Evaluate Your Way to The TOP! When asked what is/ are thehallmark(s) of a champion evaluator, many will be able to canvass short and succinct answers readily, such as: (1) the ability to listen well; (2) the ability to analyse the speech(es) ences useful to the speaker well. Indeed, a normative argument can be made ‘Champion Of Public Speaking. that the champion evaluator evinces the aptitude to craft constructive ms ina more nuanced approach that achieves an ideal equilibrium between two conflicting paradigms: destructive criticisms en the one end vis-a-vis "white washing’? excessive "sugar coating” to the extentof flattery at the other end of the spectrum, Hence, this article endeavours to inform and persuade the reader that there are 3 core principles to observe in delivering a winning evaluation speech, The 3 core principles are crystal sd as such: Core Principle #1: Be specific The importance of telling the speaker specifically what he/ she is good at is that you allow the recipient to be cognizant of his/ her strengths. The speaker will then be able to know what clicks with the audience and what does not; thereby making the appropr re adjustments in his/ her subsequent speeches. More importantly, the speaker will be able to replicate the frame of success and ensure greater success in future. Therefore, the key to a good evaluation is to be specific. Instead of saying “Your speech was good" say “Your speech was good because it did havea story and told a powerful message that still resonates inmy mind. | can even recall your speech message now. It Core Principle #2: Demonstrate to Illustrate Ourhuman mind works in a remarkable fashion: it processes visual images much faster than verbal images. That explains why mirroring of body language is often hailed as the most portant tool in establishing rapport; more important than the choice of words at times. Our human mind registers informationbetter through visualisation. dbrayani TOASTMASTERS (Cb # 04410336 |Distret-92 | Olvision-E IMPRESSIONS March 2017 | Vor6 Therefore, in the artof effective evaluation, itis important to demonstrate what you have recommended the recipient to take note of For instance, instead of simply saying “You can afford to pause before 1g something very important’, you should demonstrate it by sayi ‘You can afford to pause before 1g something very important. Here, watch me repeat the phrase that youused in your speech earlier: And the best way to lose weight is to exercise!”, Core Principle #3: Remember to conclude Many contestants in their haste to deliver all their points (strengths and areas for improvement) neglect to conclude their speeches properly, or not conclude at all. As you will see from the judging criteria, the conclusion takes up 15%of the overall score. tishence important for you to conclude. A good conclusion should incorporate the topic sentences of the strengths and areas or improvements proffered. A good conclusion allows for the recipient to better remember the points you have shared which is the p purpose of delivering the evaluation in the first place. While the 3 core principles elucidated above are essential tools to achieving success in an evaluation speech contest, they are by no means the be all and end all towinningthe evaluation speech contest. Ittakes committed investment of time to sharpen one's tool both qualitatively and quantitatively. The nextstep you can take would be to. approach your VPE of your home club for a siot as a project evaluator, language or general evaluator to put the above core principles into practice. To accelerate your learning curve exponentially, you may wish to consider having an experienced individual to mentor your progress and evaluate your evaluation. Asaconcluding remark, itis apposite to note that the benefits acquired from participating in an evaluation speech contest are not circumscribed (in terms of their utility value) to the Toastmasters speech contest domain per se. Indeed, the skills and experiences imbibed by the speech contestants can be applied in their respective workplace and social interactions with loved ones and acquaintances alike. dbazani TOASTMASTERS (Cb # 04410336 |Distret-92 | Olvision-E @ i IMPRESSIONS March 2017 | Vor6 Dhwanians Speak - Testimonials Nagendra: Dhwani is the best place where anyone can learn, develop their skills, and also have fun.
