Exam 2
PHYS 102
7/22/2016
There are 5 multi-part questions which span 6 pages on this exam.
Please make sure you have a complete test and answer every question. All problems are
out of 10 points. Problems where the number of points add to 9 indicate that there is a
point for units which may apply to more than one part.

(1) Use Gauss law to find the electric field at the point px, y, 0q for the scenarios described
below. Be sure to draw a picture which includes a clearly labeled Gaussian surface.
(a) There is an infinite line of charge with charge density 0 situated along the xaxis.
[4pts]
(b) There is an infinite slab of charge with charge density 0 and thickness t centered on
the y z plane. The point px, y, 0q is located outside of the slab. [4pts]
(c) There is both the infinite line of charge with charge density 0 situated along the
xaxis and an infinite slab of charge with charge density 0 and thickness t centered on the
y z plane. The point px, y, 0q is still located outside of the slab. [2pts]

(2) Consider a line of charge with charge density 0 which begins at the origin and ends
at the point p0, 0, Lq. The goal is to find the electric field of the line at the point p0, 0, aq
where a L.
(a) Find the electric field of this continuous charge distribution. Explicitly indicate the
values for the integration variables, dq, r, and r in the process of solving the problem. [6pts]
(b) Examine the limit where a L. What is the expression for the electric field in this
case? Explain why this expression makes sense. [4pts]

(3) A set of axes are shown below with points A, B, C, and D indicated on the axes. All
points are 12m away from the origin.
(a) If there were charges of q1 15nC at points A and C, what is the electric field at
the origin? What is the electric field at point B? [5pts]
(b) We now put a charge (q2 12nC) at point D, what is the net force on this charge?
[3pts]
(c) Assume the charges at points A and C could not move, but the charge at point D is
allowed to move. Describe the motion of the charge which starts at point D. [1pt]

(4) Consider the continuous charge distribution shown below. In the process of finding
its electric field, one would need to define a number of quantities (dq, r, r, etc.). You will
not find the electric field in this problem, but are looking for the pieces you would use to
find the field of a point located at pa, 0, 0q. The charge density is 0 with radius R, and
0 at the point p0, R, 0q.
(a) Provide the relationship between dq and the quantity d. [2pts]
(b) Provide an expression for r. Give r in terms of , a, and R. [4pts]
(c) What are the bounds of the integral used to find the field? [2pts]
(d) Give an argument based on symmetry as to which components of the field will be
zero and which components will be nonzero. [2pts]

(5) There is an ?infinite plane ?of charge located in the x y plane with charge density
?
0 . Situated at?p 2s{2, 0, L 2s{2q, we have a negative charge, q, and situated at
p 2s{2, 0, L ` 2s{2q, we have a positive charge, `q. These charges can be treated as a
dipole which is free to move.
(a) Describe, in words, the motion of this dipole. Include the final location of the center
of mass and the individual charges. [3pts]
(b) Calculate the net force and the net torque on this dipole. Use the following values
for the variables 0 5 mC2 , s 10nC, L 10m, q 300C. [6pts]
