Formulaic figure drawing systems involve

using abstract rhythms and interlocking


shapes to construct the human body. Those
shapes can then be built upon and fleshed
out for a full human figure. The benefits
of this method of drawing compared to
pure observational drawing is that it gives
you a set of tools to draw from your minds
eye when there is no reference material
available. However this method will
also develop the beginner artists
observational skills and speed up
the overall sketching process. The
formulaic method is perfect for surgeons
to use - to quickly put to paper patients
conditions and even post operative
exercises!
In this workshop we will be looking at an
adapted Reilly method. Frank Reilly, an
illustrator in the mid 20th century, created
a system of teaching that enabled students
to quickly and easily construct drawings
and paintings, by using anatomical
