One Day Workshop on

Earthquake Resistant Design of Structures

(Draft IS 1893-2016)
24 September 2016 at IIIT Hyderabad
10:00 am - 06:00 pm
INTRODUCTION
India has experienced several major earthquakes in the past few decades and according to IS
1893 (Part I):2002 around 60% (12% in Zone V, 18% in Zone IV, 26% in Zone III and 44% in Zone II) of
its landmass is prone to moderate-to-severe earthquake shaking intensity.Especially, in the last
25 years, the country has witnessed several moderate earthquakes(Bihar-Nepal border (M6.4) in
1988, Uttarkashi (M6.6) in 1991, Killari (M6.3) in 1993, Jabalpur (M6.0) in 1997, Chamoli (M6.8) in
1999, Bhuj (M6.9) in 2001, Sumatra (M8.9), Kashmir (M7.6) in 2005) and Doda (M5.2) in 2011)
caused around 40,000 fatalities due to collapse of buildings. These earthquakes have clearly
exposed the lack of understanding of seismic hazard of the country. Sometimes, even when
the hazard is understood, the lack of knowledge on earthquake resistant design and
construction practice of reinforced concrete structures is exposed. The professionals involved in
building construction should be more concerned with the safety of building infrastructure
during future earthquake events.

Workshop Objective
IS 1893 was first published in 1962. Subsequently it
has been revised 5 times. Last revision was done in
2002. Presently, draft code of part I has been
released. In this revision, the following significant
changes have been included: (1) Design spectra are
defined for natural period up to 6 s; (2) Same design
response spectra are specified for all buildings; (3)
Bases of various load combinations have been made
consistent, with those specified in the other codes;
(4) Temporary structures are brought under the
purview of this standard. (5) Importance Factor
provisions have been modified; (6) A provision is
introduced to ensure that all buildings are designed
for at least a minimum lateral force; (7) Buildings
with flat slabs are brought under the purview of this standard; (8) Additional clarity is brought in
on how to handle different types of irregularity of structural system; (9) Effect of masonry infill
walls has been included in design of frame buildings; (10) Method is introduced for arriving at
the approximate natural period of buildings with basements, step back buildings and buildings
on hill slopes; (11) Torsional provisions are simplified; and (12) Simplified method is introduced
for liquefaction potential analysis. Workshop will discuss the basics of some of these changes
along with analysis and design principles.

ABOUT IIIT HYDERABAD

International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad is an autonomous, self-
supporting research institution started in 1998 with seed support from than Government of
Andhra Pradesh. Major goal of IIIT-H is to impart a uniquely broad and interdisciplinary IT
education of the highest academic quality. This isachieved through an integrated curriculum
that consists of a highly diverse set of IT courses, interdisciplinary IT research projects, day-
today interaction with industry, preparation in entrepreneurship and personality development
courses. For more details, visit www.iiit.ac.in

ABOUT EERC
Earthquake problems are not new to India. Several moderate earthquakes in the last 2 decades
caused around 200,000 fatalities and huge property loss. These events have ravaging the
nations leaving behind countless victims. Pre-disaster planningi.e., mitigation andpreparedness,
can reduce the post-disaster response i.e., emergency, rescue and rehabilitation. Also, this
reduces tragedy and suffering to a great extent. Main reason for the casualties is collapse of
buildings. To ensure the construction of safe building infrastructure, several issues need to be
addressed. To contribute in this direction, IIIT Hyderabad established Earthquake Engineering
Research Centre (EERC). For more details, visit http://eerc.iiit.ac.in
