This research establishes support for the broad proposition that SME growth results in increased

financial challenges or problems, and that there is consequently a greater need for careful attention to

financial management in general, and financial reporting in particular, if the growing SME is to succeed in

survival and performance terms. On the basis of the findings, an empirically supported case is made that

improved financial control in growing SMEs can and should come about through (inter alia) a significant

upgrading of their financial reporting systems:
