US History 1700 Reflection

The purpose of this reflection is to make connections between the podcast assignment,
other information presented in my history class, and other courses I have taken while at
Salt Lake Community College. One of the first things that come to mind is the widespread
use of propaganda between subjects. Propaganda is information which is misleading and
biased in its intent to influence the attitudes in people. We covered plenty of examples in
my classes, most centering around a political agendas. The Stuff I Missed in History
Class podcast in my History 1700 Us History class covered the 1936 Olympic Berlin
Games. A great event used to mask the opinions of the world against Furor Hitler during
the rise of Nazi power and Arian supremacist desire to cleanse the world. In my ENG 1010
Intro to Writing class, we looked at several examples of propaganda used during World
War II. We discussed posters which were used to drive difference into peoples minds. In
US History class we covered several posters as well, which were used to scare American
soldiers during a time when sexually transmitted diseases were a major problem. In my
HUMA 1010 Intro to Humanities class, we discussed how music was a huge form of
propaganda used during the civil war, employed to boost morale. We covered the Harlem
Renaissance, and how such artists as Langston Hughes used powerful poems to evoke a
strong emotional response in people during the African American cultural movement.
Rhetoric is used today in social media, one must be careful when considering any
information posted across mass media applications. In conclusion, after reflecting on my
podcast and other subjects, you can find rhetoric has been used for decades to spread
influence and agendas. It is wise to be cautious and aware of what you accept as a result
of reading, hearing, or seeing something.
