This is because the ZrH phase was long regarded as being a metastable phase. It was
well known, however, that the ZrH and ZrH1.66 phases were often observed to co-
exist in Zr alloy specimens when they were examined microscopically or by neutron
diffraction. It was assumed that some impurity was perhaps stabilising the ZrH phase
