APPLICATION. Nuts having short pilots (0.040, 0.050, and 0.060 inch nominal heights) are designed for use in
metal thicknesses 0.078 inch (14 gauge) or thinner. Nuts having the long pilot (0.085 inch nominal height)
are intended for use in metal thickness heavier than 0.078 inch (14 gauge).
The hole sizes tabulated are those recommended by the manufacturers. For ease and speed in positioning
the nuts, it is suggested that pre-formed holes be kept toward the maximum limits. However, where
alignment of assembled nuts is critical, pre-formed holes should be reduced accordingly toward the
minimum limits.
THREAD SERIES. Shall be Unified coarse or fine (UNC or UNF) for all sizes.
PROTECTIVE TREATMENT. Unless otherwise specified, nuts shall be furnished plain with a rust preventive oil.
If a coating or plating is required, it shall be specified by adding the appropriate suffix letter to the part
number; see Section SP-6 for plating requirements.

requirements.
NOTE: When locknuts are to be electroplated, the appropriate suffix letter shall be used to indicate that hydrogen
embrittlement relief treatment is required.
All other requirements are as specified in Engineering Standard 81D-A.
PART NUMBER. Consists of the standard number, 59D or 60D, to designate the thread series, followed by the size
number(s). The size number(s) times 0.0625 equal the nominal size.
NOTES: 1. The shaded areas denote those sizes that are not preferred.
2. Asterisk (*) indicates that for these sizes the relationship between minimum R and maximum S
shall be so maintained that in no case will the pilot height be less than 0.015 inch beyond the
projection height.
3. Reference dimension, for clearance purposes only.
MISCELLANEOUS DIMENSIONS. The tops of the nuts may be chamfered or rounded at the corners and edges
provided the flat area and the degree of flatness are sufficient to permit intimate contact with the welding
electrode. The top face shall be parallel to the bearing surface and the plane across the tips of the projections
within the limits allowed by the dimensions specified. The axis of the threaded hole shall be at right angles to
the top face within two degrees. The pilot diameters shall not be eccentric with the threaded hole by more than
0.008 inch. The heights of all projections, on any one nut, shall be within 0.005 inch of each other.
Where not otherwise specified or as a minimum requirement where maximum is given; the threaded holes shall
be countersunk on both sides of the nut, 90 to 120 degrees included angles. The start of the angle shall be from
a diameter 0.016 inch over the major diameter of the thread for nut sizes through 0.500 inch and 0.31 inch over
the major diameter of the thread for larger sizes.
APPLICATION. Nuts having short pilots (0.040, 0.050, and 0.060 inch nominal heights) are designed for use in
metal thicknesses 0.078 inch (14 gauge) or thinner. Nuts having the long pilot (0.085 inch nominal height) are
intended for use in metal thickness heavier than 0.078 inch (14 gauge).
The hole sizes tabulated are those recommended by the manufacturers. For ease and speed in positioning the
nuts, it is suggested that pre-formed holes be kept toward the maximum limits. However, where alignment of
assembled nuts is critical, pre-formed holes should be reduced accordingly toward the minimum limits.
It is suggested that manufacturers be consulted in regard to their recommendations on the welding equipment
and processing to be used in the installation of these nuts.
THREAD SERIES. Shall be Unified coarse or fine (UNC or UNF) for all sizes.
PROTECTIVE TREATMENT. Unless otherwise specified, nuts shall be furnished plain with a rust preventive oil.
If a coating or plating is required, it shall be specified by adding the appropriate suffix letter to the part
number. See Section SP-6 for plating requirements.
DEFECTS. Nuts shall be free from burrs, seams, laps, loose scale, and all other defects that might affect their
serviceability.
PART NUMBER. Consists of the standard number, followed by digits) that signify the nominal size of the nut.
Those digit(s) following 72D, 73D, 74D, or 75D times 0.0625 equals the nominal fractional nut size. Those
digit(s) following 76D, 77D, 78D, or 79D signify the nominal machine screw nut number size.
VALUES. All values, as shown in this specification, are in the U.S. customary system.
GENERAL. The requirements of the Industrial Fasteners Institute Standards IFI -100, -101, and -107 are a part of this
specification. Excerpts from these IFI standards are repeated below as design aids.
SCOPE. This specification establishes the mechanical and performance requirements for the prevailing -torque type steel
hexagon and steel hexagon flanged locknuts.
DEFINITIONS.
PREVAILING -TORQUE LOCKNUTS. A prevailing -torque type locknut is one which is resistant to frictional rotation
due to a self-contained prevailing -torque feature, and not because of a compressive load developed against the
bearing surface of the locknut.
LOCKNUT. The word " locknut" is a generic term used to identify the internally threaded products covered within the
specified CLARK parts standard. The term " locknut" is not intended to imply an indefinite term of locking
position.
PREVAILING -TORQUE. The prevailing -torque developed by a locknut is defined as the torque necessary to rotate the
locknut on its mating externally threaded component, with the torque being measured while the locknut is in
motion, and with no axial load in the mating component.
GRADE DESIGNATIONS. CLARK uses three grade of prevailing -torque type hexagon locknuts which are designated
respectively as Grade B, Grade C, and High Tensile. CLARK has one grade of prevailing -torque type hexagon flanged
locknut which is designated as Grade G.
Each grade of locknut is suggested for use with bolts as shown in Table 1.
DESIGN. The method of producing the prevailing -torque characteristics, and the design of the prevailing-torque feature
shall be in accordance with the specified CLARK parts standard.
REQUIREMENTS.
MATERIAL. Locknuts shall be made of a medium carbon or alloy steel, heat treated or cold worked, as needed, to meet
the mechanical and performance requirements as set forth within this specification.
FINISH. Whether furnished plain or with a protective coating, all locknuts shall be provided with an additional
supplementary lubricant which shall be clean and dry to the touch. The performance of locknuts shall not
deteriorate when stored indoors for a period of six months.
BASIC DIMENSIONS. Locknuts shall conform to the dimensions as specified within the CLARK parts standard. The
portion of the locknut containing the prevailing -torque feature may have a special contour within the maximum
permitted width across flats and thickness. The minimum width across flats shall not apply at the depressed
portion of the locknut that provided the prevailing-torque feature.
The diameter of chamfer circle on double chamfered locknuts and the diameter of washer face except flanged
locknuts, shall be within the limits of the maximum width across flats and 95% of the minimum width across flats.
The tops of washer faced locknuts shall be flat and the diameter of the chamfer circle shall be equal to the
maximum width across flats within a tolerance of minimum 15%. The length of chamfer at the hexagon corners
shall be from 5 to 15% of the basic thread diameter. The surface of the chamfer may be slightly convex or rounded.
CORNER FILL. A rounding or lack of fill at the junction of the hexagon corners with chamfer shall be permissible
provided the width across corners is within the specified limits at and beyond a distance equal to 17.5% of the
basic thread diameter from the chamfered faces.
THREAD FORM. That portion of the threaded length containing the prevailing -torque element need not conform to
the threaded dimensions specified within the CLARK parts standard.
THREAD START. Locknuts 0.375 inch size and smaller shall assemble a minimum of one -half turn, and locknuts
0.4375 inch larger shall assemble a minimum of one full turn by hand on a basic GO thread plug gage. The plug
gage shall be without a chip groove, and shall have a point with dimensions conforming to those on hexagon head
cap screws as specified in the American National Standard ANSI B18.2.1-81.
