Boldly (2017).

This source is a video that talks about the evolution of the hair of black women starting at
the 1600s. This video shows how their hair has been affected during slavery, after slavery, and
currently. This source is limited because its not a primary source. This is a valuable source
because it shows how black women have changed how they style their hair throughout the
centuries.
This source will help my project because it proves that society has had a major impact on
the way in which black women have both been forced, and have decided on their own to wear
their hair a certain way. It also shows how some black women are embarrassed by their natural
hair and want to look more European. The only way that it wouldnt help my project is by not
giving me personal accounts on the impact of hair on black women.
Buzzfeed, now known as Boldy, is an American internet media company. They provide
coverage on several topics and are very well-known. Having the reputation that it does, I believe
that this source will be reliable.

Harris-Perry, M. V. (2011). Introduction. In Sister Citizen: Shame, Stereotypes, and Black
Women in America (pp. 4-23). Yale University Press.
Harris-Perry (2011)
This source is a book that talks about the many stereotypes of black women that have
been present for a long time. It talks about how America makes black women want to feel
shameful about themselves. The representations that black women see of themselves shape the
way that they continue to live their lives. This source can serve as both a primary and secondary
source, therefore its valuable.
This source will help my project by giving me insight on some of the many stereotypes that
are forced upon black women. It will also enlighten me on societys negative impact on black
women. It may not be the most credible source to use since, being written by a black woman, its
susceptible to bias.
The background and experience of this author are what gives me the reason to believe that she
is a credible source. Melissa V. Harris-Perry is a writer, professor, and a political commentator
with a focus of African American politics, therefore I believe that she is knowledgeable about
my topic.

Howley (2015)

This source is a magazine that talks about the achievements of Serena Williams. On the
cover of the magazine and on her own feature in the magazine, she is portrayed in a positive
way. This source will be valuable because it proves the fact that Serena Williams has done what
many others havent, yet she still gets backlash in some type of way. The weakness of this source
is that Serena Williams own opinion isnt included in the source.
This will help my project because it shows that no matter how hard a black woman may
work, theyll still get criticized for something, whether it be big, small, or nonexistent. I would
use this source because it gives a direct example of a successful black woman being brought
down by society.
Kerry Howley is a writer and a professor at the University of Iowa. With a job like this, I
believe that would stay from as much bias as possible. The Cut is a website that talks about the
latest fashion trends. I believe that the writers on it are knowledgeable on the topics that they
write about.

Thompson (2012)

This source is a newspaper article. The article talks about a survey that was taken that
shows how black women are affected by the stereotypes that are placed on them by
society. Many women feel lesser than other people. This source is valuable
because it gives a firsthand account of the many emotions that black women feel as
a result of stereotypes.
This will help my project because it exposes the feelings of black women that
regularly wouldnt be expressed or talked about. I would use this source because it
gives direct results from a survey done on real black women, which leaves little room
for bias.
The Washington Post is a well-known newspaper that is read by a large audience.
Krissah Thompson has a lot of background in writing and has been writing for the
Washington Post for several years (since 2001).

Arceneaux (2017)

This source is a blog that talks about a scandal on the show The Real Housewives of
Atlanta. The blogger talks about Phaedra Parks is hypocritical. Parks argues that black
women can be professional and dont have to act ratchet, although she does the
opposite. This blog is limiting because its very opinionated and bias.
This blog will probably not help me in my project because there arent many facts to get
from it. I could probably only use the situation as an example on how famous
black women will vouch for classiness but do the opposite. This source may be
helpful since it could support a counterargument.
The blogger, Michael Arceneaux, attended Howard University and is somewhat
well-known. Hes known as a cultural critic and may not serve as the best resource for
my project.

This source is an article that highlights 30 females who have had a significant impact on
society in some type of way through leadership. This source may be limiting because it isnt a
primary source. However, the source can be valuable because it shows what these women have
done to make a positive and significant impact.
This source will help my project because its proving that black women dont always
inherit their fame through them being negatively portrayed. It shows that black women can rise
above the stereotypes that plague them in society.
This source is credible because Allison McGevna is the editorial director. She has a lot of
experience as a writer. Keyaira Kelly is the staff writer and is a television media professional,
therefore she has a lot of experience in this field.

Gates, H. L., & Jarrett, G. A. (2007). The new Negro: Readings on race, representation, and
African American culture, 1892-1938. Princeton, N.J: Princeton University Press.
Gates (2007)

This source is a book that includes several essays that were written to talk about the
issues of race and representation in the African American culture. These essays are written by
many well-known people including W.E.B. Du Bois and Zora Neale Hurston. This is a useful
source because it gives the perspectives of several people who were living during this time
period. It may be possible to compare the representation of black people during this time to the
representation of black people today. It may be somewhat limiting since many of the essays may
be subjective.
This source will definitely help my project because it will be great in proving the idea of
black women being underrepresented. It may possibly show how the New Negro has evolved
over time. I would use this because it seems to be a credible source on many different topics.
Gene Andrew Jarrett has written several books on African American culture and is
known to be very educated in this field. Henry Louis Gates Jr. also has a profound background in
this field and is currently the Professor and Director of the Hutchins Center for African and
African American Research at Harvard University.

U.S. Census Bureau (2015)

This source is a census bureau that shows the amount of black men and women that are
either now married, never married, divorced, separated, or widowed. This source shows how it is
more likely for black women to be never married, divorced, separated, and widowed. This source
may possibly prove that black women have been disregarded by black men because of how
society has portrayed them in the media.
This source will definitely help my project because these are statistics that prove that
black females are more likely to be single. I would use this because its a possible way to support
the idea that black women may be disregarded by males when it comes to relationships.
The U.S. Census Bureau is a credible source because its an agency of the U.S. Federal
Statistical System. It is known to be a reliable source.

Greenfield (2017)

This source is an article about a young girl that spoke out about her insecurities at an
extracurricular gathering of girls. This extracurricular group is called the Flourishing Blossom
Society for Girls. The article includes a video of the girl speaking and clearly showing how
stereotypes in society about black girls have affected her.
This source will help my project because its a firsthand account of how society degrades
young black girls and women. I will definitely use this source because its a primary source and a
personal account of societys impact on the mindset of a young black woman.
The writer of the article is a senior writer which means that she has a lot of experience
in writing and has one of the highest and most important jobs. Due to this, I think that this article
is a reliable source, especially since its both a primary and secondary source.

Mallory (2011)

This source is an article that talks about the effects of reality TV shows on the young
black women who watch it, as well as other people in the world. It talks about how black women
should take a stand to make sure that the world knows that the lifestyles on reality TV shows
arent what the majority of black women are living.
This source will help my project because it supports my main argument that reality TV
shows negatively affect the minds of those that watch them. It supports the point that these
shows degrade black women and portray them in a way that isnt the norm for most. I would use
this source because it supports the fact that black women and those outside of that group can be
negatively influenced by reality TV.
This source seems to be credible because its a leading online platform in the African
American community. The writer of the source, Tamika Mallory is a well-known activist and
advocates for equal rights for women.
