I. Introduction
A. Attention Getter: have you ever wondered why today’s rap music sounds the way it
does, and why are lyrics so violent and misogynous?
B. Reason to Listen: many of us enjoy this type of music or are curious about it.
C. Credibility Statement: I have been listening to rap music my whole life, studied the life of
today’s movement precursors and I make music myself.
D. Thesis Statement: Gangasta rap changed the rap game and set the line for upcoming
rappers and styles.
1. Social context
a. This all started during the 80´s decade, during this time racism and police
brutality were out of hand.
b. black people in neighborhoods were being harassed and being arrested
unfairly.
Transition: Now that we know the origins of the gangasta rap, we need to know the reason why they
wrote lyrics about the things they did
a. Being a young colored man during this time in LA was hard, this were all the
things they were exposed to and what they were able to see daily.
b. Drug abuse was a reality most of them experienced in some way or another
as N.W.A expresses on “dope man” which talks about a drug dealer who
abuses of other people’s addiction to get whatever he wanted. “It was once
said by a man who couldn't quit
Dope man please, can I have another hit?
The dope man said "Cluck, I don't give a shit
If your girl kneel down and suck my dick"
It all happened and the guy tried to choke her
Nigga didn't care, she ain't nothing but a smoker
That's the way it goes, that's the name of the game” N.W.A – Dope Man.
(n.d.). Also, guns have been widely available for people to have and in the
“streets” having one to protect yourself is crucial.
2. protest.
a. Some songs like “fuck tha police” by N.W.A explain the social context of the
time and this was their way to protest against the police brutality and unfair abuse
of colored skin citizens. Using lyrics as “Fuckin with me 'cause I'm a teenager
With a little bit of gold and a pager
Searchin' my car, lookin' for the product
Thinkin' every nigga is sellin' narcotics” (N.W.A – Fuck Tha Police, n.d.)
Transition: Knowing the background of the lyrics now we are going to talk about why these songs blew
up and were so successful.
a. The lyrics, flows, and beats were something else during that time. Dr. Dre
was behind the production of the tracks and he made some good rhythms,
even if you weren’t paying attention to the lyrics the beat would make you
move your head.
b. Just like today’s music, the success of a song was not something you can
attribute to an specific thing, the combination of their way and skills on story
telling and rapping could the principal of this factors, since this is not music
you can dance to you were listening to it because of the lyrics and the flow
and truth in those lyrics were recognized all trough out the world.
III. Conclusion
1. Gangsta rap came from poor neighborhoods that were being abused by police
officers, some of them without a fair reason and just because of their skin
color.
2. Second, these lyrics were exposed because this was the reality they were
facing at the time.
3. Finally, they had success because they made good music that people could
relate to.
B. Restate Thesis: Gangsta rap changed the rap game and built the bases on
which today’s rap music relies and takes inspiration from.
