Strategy to Restore Jordan Lake Summary Statement: SePRO Corporation—a US-based company with facilities in eastern NC and a history of cooperatively managing public water resources in NC and throughaut the US—offers a science-based, reliable, quantitative management program as a strategy to mitigate Jordan Lake's water quality challenges using a customized, adaptive plan of nationally- proven technologies. SePRO has worked closely with NC natural resource agencies for many years implementing complex, large-scale management of aquatic invasive plants such as hydrila in important NC public waters including Lake Gaston, the Tar River Reservoir, Lake Waccamaw, and the Eno River. With a science-based approach similar to its aquatic plant management support in NC, SePRO also has successfully supported national projects protecting/restoring drinking water reservoirs and other aquatic environments from poor water quality using a comprehensive system of new product/service solutions. Reliable, predictable, adaptive management is supported by quantitative action thresholds, specialized lab services, and unique product solutions to eliminate harmful algal blooms and deactivate excess nutrients driving poor water quality. At the current time, the State of North Carolina continues to examine strategies capable of restoring the water {quality of Jordan Lake—z 13,940 acre reservoir in Chatham and Durham Counties in North Carolina that serves as a local source of drinking water along with other uses. The reservoir is eutrophic-hypereutrophic and is listed on North Carolina’s 303¢ lst of impaired waters for exceeding water quality standards for chlorophyll a, turbidity, and pH. SePRO’s technical approach appears an excellent fit for the need to reliably and quantitatively mitigate impaired conditions in Jordan Lake. Along with ecological benefits, this approach would complement >) > implementation of new water quality rules, allowing them to be adapted and more effectively and gradually implemented with reduced impact to local economies in the Jordan watershed. ‘SePRO’s primary technologies proposed for 2016 demonstration and potential future operational adoption on Jordan Lake are the following: SeClear® Algaecide and Water Quality Enhancer: NSF ANSI certified, and the only EPA registered product with this dual capability (SeClear website PAK27®: NSF ANSI certified, non-copper, peroxide formulation with proven track record for potable water treatment (PAK2? website) Phoslock®: NSF ANSI certified, lanthanum clay formulation capable of predictable, selective P deactivation wit negligible WA changes and risk to non-target organisms (Phoslock website for quantitative tracking of action thresholds used to trigger adaptive ‘SeSCRIPT®: Focused laboratory se management (SeSCRIPT website) ‘These solutions have been utilized nationally and documented to directly mitigate the impaired conditions impacting Jordan Lake. With SeSCRIPT laboratory services utilized in intensive monitoring to complement DEQ ‘and other longer-term water quality monitoring efforts on the lake, Jordan’s impaired conditions can be effectively addressed: (nreiettearlicakad Wine ihes els Rei nee AvencS ‘Short-term: ‘Supported by SeSCRIPT monitoring, SeClear and/or PAK27 can be used Chia and pH reactively to address imminent exceedance of water quality standards based on set action thresholds Long-term: SeClear program and/or Phoslock will inactivate excess phosphorus to Chia and pH decrease frequency of potential chl a and pH exceedances Ongoing: SeClear and Phoslock are proven to shift productivity from Shift Harmful Cyanobacteria to. cyanobacterial dominance to beneficial green algae Beneficial Algal Community Ongoing: Phoslock and SeClear programs can predictably inactivate phosphorus Nutrient Load Reduction to help meet TMDL loading reduction goals Representative data of effective management of harmful algae and impaired water quality using SePRO technical solutions are provided below. [Atthe request of the State of North Carolina, SePRO can further describe its approach to state partner agencies and formally develop a proposal for 2016 demonstration and potential longer-term operational implementation to improve Jordan Lake water quality hm @sepro.com, Ph: 919-628-3855) or {@seov0,com, Ph: 317-775-3309), For more information, contact Sarah Miller, Portfolio Leader ( Dr. Mark Heilman, Senior Aquatic Technology Leader (121 Immediate Water Quality Improvement Using SeClear Harmful cyanobacteria have been adaptively managed in multiple Virginia drinking water reservoirs from 2013 through 2015. SeSCRIPT monitoring has supported SeClear treatments based on water quality thresholds including algal density and formation of taste and odor compounds. The representative data here show total algal cll counts at different water depths ‘through 2013 annual monitoring program. Three SeClear applications (red arrows) were made based on SeSCRIPT results showing developing bloom conditions and likely action threshold exceedance.
