Algebra I Course Description:


This course is an introduction to mathematical functions and applications. This is a participation based
class, which emphasizes group work, mathematical discourse, and understanding the real world around
us using mathematical applications. In this class we will be exploring concepts of algebra including (but
not limited to) function analysis, polynomials, systems of equations, statistics, number theory/modeling,
and multi-variable algebraic expressions.

CLASSROOM RULES & EXPECTATIONS


Be in your seat, with all supplies, and ready to work when the class period begins.
Follow the 5 Ps: Please be Prompt, Prepared, Productive, Polite, and Patient.
Please be respectful to your teacher, your classroom, and each other.
Please try and use the restroom before or after class.
Please clean up after yourself and put away all materials before end of class.
Cell Phones must be turned off/silent and kept in your backpacks during class time.
Students must adhere to the behavior and discipline polices outlined in the student handbook/agenda.
Students are expected to follow JCMS dress code policy.

SUPPLIES Please have the following available within the first week of school:
Pens, Pencils, Colored Pencils
Composition notebook (Advisory only)
3 ring binder with loose-leaf ruled and graph paper.
Scientific calculator (recommended) Phones will not be allowed as calculators
One box of tissue for the classroom.
Package of copy paper.

GRADING
Course grades will be 40% classwork/participation, 30% tests/quizzes, & 30% homework.
Test corrections will be available for ALL tests and required for students that do not pass a test.

ABSENCES/MAKE-UP WORK/LATE WORK


Please refer to your agenda/student handbook regarding our schools Absence Policy.
It is the students responsibility to make-up missing assignments, quizzes, or tests due
to an absence.
There will be a designated area in the classroom where students may check for missing
assignments.
Make-up quizzes, tests and test corrections may be done at lunch time or after school.
It is strongly suggested that you take quizzes and tests in class on the scheduled dates.
Missed/Late work for a unit will not be accepted once the Unit Test has been given to
the class.

IMPORTANT DATES/SCHEDULE
Important dates will be posted. These will updated frequently, and students and parents
will be notified well in advance.
BEHAVIOR
All students are reminded to follow the code of conduct outlined in the behavior and
discipline policies in their student handbook/agenda.
JCMS follows a student accountability system and tardy policy.

Consequences: Failure to comply with classroom rules and expectations may result in
disciplinary action including but not limited to:

Administrative Discipline Referral

ATTENDANCE
Regular attendance is encouraged and essential to being successful in math. Excessive
absenteeism and/or tardiness will result in a parent/teacher conference. Please
reference the attendance policy in your student handbook/agenda.

EXTRA HELP!
I will be available for tutoring/extra help in my classroom during lunch and after school.
The days & times will be made available to students and posted in my room once
established. Students should not hesitate to seek out extra help if the material in class is
not understood. I will gladly make time for any/all students requiring extra help.
