Dear Ji Hyo,
Thank you for your letter and the beautiful postcards you sent. Korea is really beautiful, isn't she?
Maybe one day, in the not too distant future, I will be able to visit your country.

You wanted to know whay my favourite fruit is. It is the durian. The name comes from a
Malay word which means 'thorn'. Why? The outer skin is covered with thorn. The durian is often
called 'The King of Fruits' in Malaysia. It is well known in most of South-East Asia.

The fruit is roughly the size of a man's head. When opened, there are compartments or
segments inside. The fruit seeds rest in these segments. The soft flesh surrounds the seed. The taste
can be compared to rich custard. I must not forget to mention that the fruit has a strong odour. Most
people think the smell is bad but some people like it! The durian is not allowed in aeroplanes and
some hotels because of its distinctive smell. I have tried many types of fruit and I love almost all
Malaysian fruit, but the durian is my favourite.

Ji Hyo, I know you can buy a durian in some Korea supermarkets. I hear it is very expensive
but do try it. Better still, come to Malaysia during the durian season.

My best wishes to your family. Call me on my mobile phone if you come down.

Your friend,
Fika
