Welcome to 4th grade at New Bridge Elementary School. We look forward to building a
community of learners that involves students, parents, and staff. We will be learning a lot and
having experiences that make lasting memories. Please read this document carefully and let us
know if you have any questions or concerns.

Grade Level Description, Goals, and Objectives:

Students should have arrived with a firm understanding of how printed language works. They
should be working to read effortlessly without hesitation and be able to apply a variety of
strategies to help them comprehend what they read.

Students build their vocabulary through listening and reading a variety of materials. They
should be able to communicate their ideas, both orally and in writing, for a variety of purposes
and audiences. Students learn to edit and refine their own work and during the year, they work
to refine these skills.

Fourth grade students should be comfortable using basic mathematics skills in everyday
situations. They should be fluent in basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
mathematical processes. In fourth grade, students will spend the year building on their third
grade skills to learn and develop an understanding in the concepts of: Operations and Algebraic
Thinking, Number and Operations in Base Ten, Fractions, Geometry, and Measurement and
Data. Concepts will be reviewed throughout the year. For a more detailed description of what
your child will be learning and when, please visit the math section of our 4th grade website.

In science, students will explore the elements of weather, the water cycle, rocks and soil, fossils,
and Utahs main environments (wetlands, forests, and deserts). In social studies, students will
learn about Utahs history. They will focus on Westward expansion (Spanish explorers, mountain
men, Mormon pioneers), the transcontinental railroad, and the five Native American tribes.

Students will also get the chance to participate in four modules from our Project Lead the Way
curriculum. Students will complete two engineering modules focused on energy, one computer
science module focused computer systems and coding, and one biomedical sciences module
focused on the human brain. In each module, students will learn all about the topic as they work
towards designing a solution that solves a given problem.

Behavior and Expectations

1. Students are expected to come to school ready to learn. This includes but is not limited to:
getting enough sleep each night, bringing required materials to class every day, and
leaving distractions such as cell phones and toys at home.
2. Students are expected to treat ALL others (teachers, students, custodians, counselors,
etc.) with respect.
3. Students are expected to do their best work.
4. Students are expected to follow school-wide New Bridge Elementary rules:
o Positive - "I will have a positive attitude and be ready for learning."
o Respectful - "I will be respectful to my school and my peers."
o Independent - "I will be an independent thinker and worker."
o Determined - "I will be determined to do my best."
o Exceptional - "I will produce exceptional work."
Consequences for not following school rules may include warnings, parent contact, loss of
privileges, think-time (a brief removal from the classroom), or in extreme cases, in-school-
suspension.

Attendance is crucial to your childs learning. If your child is ill (has a fever and/or is
vomiting), please keep him/her home, call the school, and send a note upon return. If the
student will be out for more than one day, please contact the teacher for missed work.

Grading

Students receive a report card four times per year. Student grades can also be accessed online
by going to ogdensd.org and clicking on Student Information System in the top left corner (for
step-by-step directions, ask your childs teacher for a handout.) Parent Teacher Conferences are
scheduled two times per year. Translators are available and this time is invaluable to you, the
student, and the teacher.

Homework

We believe that students should work hard as learners and discoverers during school hours and
have time to relax and be children after school hours. Therefore, daily homework will not be
assigned. However, it is a school-wide expectation that all students read for at least 20
minutes each night! Below, we have addressed some common concerns:

How will I know what my child is learning in school?

We will be posting frequent updates (at least once a week) in the Seesaw app in order to keep you
in the loop about your childs learning. You will also be able to access their Google Classrooms to see
current assignments, past work, and more.

What if my child is struggling?

Supportive materials and resources will be provided to those students who require them. Our
fourth grade website - fourthgradenewbridge.weebly.com - also has several online resources your child
may access from home.
How can I help my child at home?
Here are a few suggestions: Use Seesaw and the fourth grade website to help facilitate discussions
with your child. Read and discuss books at home. Play board games to help promote strategic thinking
and social skills. Play cards and dice games to help improve math fluency.

What if I still want my child to do some review work at home?

Students can access iReady and Lexia (our math and reading computer programs) from home.
Any time spent on these programs is very valuable.
