Unit/Lesson Title: Oxy demonstration Lesson duration: 1 hour Stage Year 7 Class: Industrial Arts DT 6

Rationale: Students will learn about basic Oxy Acetylene techniques such as bending and shaping. Students will continue their projects after
demonstration.

10 Recap: What are the students up to in their current projects? Students tell where they are up to in their projects

Talk about the oxy: they are not allowed to use the oxy in year 7;
however, they will make projects that involve using the oxy and seeing
how it works will benefit them now and in the future. Tell them how to
start the flame and what safety precautions are needed.

10-15 Instruct the students to forward out quietly to the oxy for the
demonstration.
Students will stand where requested a safe distance
Ensure they are standing a safe distance away. away

Show them the oxygen bottle and the acetylene bottle and what the
regulator does.

Ask them what to do first when starting the torch. Put safety glasses on, turn on the acetylene and the
oxygen at the bottle, crack the fuel tap, light the torch,
open oxygen line and adjust it to the correct flame. The
students should be able to answer this, as it was spoken
about in the seminar room.
Start the torch in the holder and begin heating a piece of metal.
Explain what is happening and why the piece of metal is being held at
that point of the flame.

Refer to the red-hot metal and reiterate how dangerous the oxy is and
what damage it will do to skin.

Demonstrate a droplet of metal hitting the ground.

Demonstrate hammering the metal into a point

Demonstrate bending the metal into a shape.

Turn the torch off and the gas

30 Instruct the students to continue working on their projects


Students will continue to work on their projects.
Review/ Pack up 5 minutes before the bell. No tools will be left out.
Conclusion
If there is time recap on the lesson. Students will pack up their jobs and put away any tools
and equipment used
