Theme Poem
Focus Language Arts
Topic Anthology of poems for Year 4 : At the Playground by Brian Moses
Content standard 4.3 By the end of the 6-year primary schooling, pupils will be able to
plan, organize and produce creative works for enjoyment.
Learning standard 4.3.1 Able to plan, prepare and participate in a performance with
guidance based on literary works.
Behavioural By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:
objectives a) plan on how to recite the poem
b) create their own way to recite the poem
c) present the poem with confidence

Activities INTRODUCTION
1. Teacher writes the word poem on the whiteboard and asks the
pupils if they know the answer.
2. Teacher tells the pupils that we are going to read a poem in
English and shows the picture (Appendix A) of a playground.
3. Teacher asks the pupils to talk about the playground that they
had been to.
4. Teacher asks the pupils to share their experiences with their
friends.
- What did they do at the playground?
- What did they see?
- How did they feel?
Before we read the poem, teacher introduces the word poet.
1. Teacher tells the students that a poet is someone who writes a
poem.
2. Teacher explained to the class that the poem we were about to
read is written by the poet Brian Moses.(Appendix B)
STEP 1
1. Teacher put the pictures from page 3 of the 'Anthology of
Poem' book up on the board, and asks the pupils to predict
what the poem was about.(Appendix C)
2. The pupils talk about what they could see in the pictures
- what is the girl doing, what is she feeling, why is she
laughing / crying etc.
STEP 2
1. Teacher recites the poem once, and the pupils listen.
2. Teacher asks the pupils whether their predictions are correct.
3. Then, teacher divides the pupils to sit in groups of four or five,
and distributes jumbled strips of verses from the poem.
(Appendix D )
4. Teacher reads the poem again, the pupils listen and try to
arrange the strips in the correct order.
5. Then, teacher checks the answers together.
6. Teacher puts some bigger jumbled strips on the board, reread
the poem and invites several volunteers to help put the strips in
the correct order while the rest of the class monitor.
STEP 3
1. Teacher assigns the pupils to come out with different styles of
reciting the poem.
2. The pupils present their performance in groups.
3. Each group will be evaluating other groups by giving them stars
on the Tree of Stars
4. The ones with the most stars win.

CLOSURE
1. Teacher ends the lesson by having the Disappearing text'
Activity.
2. Teacher asks the pupils to repeat lines of the poem, filling in
missing words as teacher deletes the words one by one.
3. In the end, the pupils were able to recite the whole poem
without having to refer to the text.
