1. TESTOSTERONE
a. Androgen replacement therapy
b. Use: hypogonadism, replacement therapy, delayed puberty
c. Adverse Effects: virilization: acne, deep voice, facial hair in women, edema,
premature long-bone closure, Hepatoxicity, increase LDL cholesterol, prostate
cancer
d. Monitor CBC for increased HgB and Hct, fluid retention and liver function test
e. Schedule III- abuse potential

2. SILDENAFIL (VIAGRA)
a. Tadalafil, -Vardenafil
b. PDE5 inhibitors for erectile dysfunction
c. MOA: enhance blood flow, response to stimuli by blocking PDE5
d. Adverse Effects: hypotension, priapism (painful erection for over 4 hours),
ischemic optic neuropathy, hearing loss, headache, flushing, dyspepsia
e. CI: MI/CVA, arrhythmia, CHF, hypertension (170/110), hypotension (90/50)
f. Monitor: blood pressure
g. Teach: 1 tablet prior to sex once a day and avoid nitro!

3. FINASTERIDE (PROSCAR)
a. 5-Alpha Reductase Inhibitor
b. MOA: inhibits enzyme reducing mechanical obstruction
c. USE: urinary symptoms related to BPH * best with ENLARGED prostate
d. Adverse Effects: decrease ejaculation and libido, gynecomastia, impotence
e. Monitor: PSA
f. Teach: DONT TOUCH PILLS, slow effects (6 12 months), pregnancy x!,
lifelong treatment

4. ALFUZOSIN (UROXATRAL)
a. NON-SELECTIVE Alpha-1 Adrenergic Blocker
b. MOA: block receptors and relax smooth muscles, improve urine flow and
decrease BPH symptoms.
c. USE: urinary symptoms related to BPH * best with SMALL prostate
d. AE: hypotension, fainting, dizziness, nasal congestion
e. Monitor: hypotension, additive effects w. other medications
f. Teach: Cataract surgery can lead to floppy iris

5. TAMSULOSIN (FLOMAX)
a. SELECTIVE Alpha-1 Adrenergic Blocker
b. MOA: relax smooth muscles, improve urine flow, decrease BPH symptoms
c. USE: urinary symptoms related to BPH * best with SMALL prostate
d. AE: abnormal ejaculation
e. Monitor: increases levels of other medications
