Prairie Ecosystems Management

Dedicated to Environmental Education and Action

Soil Solarization Trials Evaluation, Winter Kill Cover Crops and Compost Tea
August 26th

On May 21st we solarized about 200sqft of Bermuda grass and weeds at Home Grown
Community Garden. For this workshop we will evaluate the effectiveness of our soil
solarization trials, treat our sterilized soil with compost tea and plant a cover crop mix
that includes species that die when temperature fall below 25.

Participants will get hands on experience with soil solarization, planting cover crops,
winter kill seed mixes for Kansas City and use of compos tea to kick start the soil
biology after sterilization.

This workshop is part of an ongoing trial of a non chemical native species establishment
strategy outlined in Permaculture Extension Bulletin N100 available at:
https://www.scribd.com/document/341549997/Native-Species-Establishment-Strategy-
Using-Permaculture-Design-Principles

Recommended cover crop Seeds will be available for purchase.

Introduction to Permaculture September 9th

Permaculture is an integrative, ethics based sustainable design system used worldwide

to create sustainable human communities. We will explore basic permaculture design
principles for food production in home gardens and on urban and suburban homesteads
and farms.

Some of the subjects we will cover are building healthy soil with cover crops, water
harvesting and urban food forests.

Introduction to Ecological Design November 8th, 11th

Ecological design is the integration of design with living systems processes for
sustainable, regenerative communities.

You will learn about todays environmental and social challenges and the design
practices that will help us redesign the world we want.

We will explore the complex interconnections between the land, water, soil, climate and
living beings, the built environment and our Communities. Permaculture and
Agroecology will be the decision support toolbox for our design projects.

There will be a hands-on Ecological Design Immersion on Saturday, Nov 11th from
10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at 3000 E 20th St, Kansas City, MO 64127.
