Introduction to project
Project Motivation
Mauritius being well-known for its green scenery and beautiful landscapes is now having
environmental problems. One of the main environmental problems Mauritius is facing is
pollution (air pollution, land pollution and sea pollution).
Environmental conservation project is to maintain the natural resources for the future
generation. It is of utmost importance to create awareness of the Mauritian public as well as
students who are the future leaders of tomorrow. Hence, through this project the aim is to
target 30% of the student population of primary, secondary as well as tertiary institutions
.Through this, the society will also be motivated in seeing youngsters trying to make an
impact on the protection of the environment.
Pollution is created mostly by human actions, but can also be a result of natural
disasters. Pollution has a detrimental effect on any living organism in an environment,
making it virtually impossible to sustain life.
Where do we dump our wastes? The World is becoming increasingly crippled by garbage,
and the issue is keeps on worsening. According to the latest report by the World Bank, urban
rubbish generation is set to increase twofold over the next 15 years.
Each year we throw away 58 billion disposable cups, billions of plastic bags, 200 liters of
Water bottle, billions of household waste, toxic waste, and even e-waste.
While most are incinerated, others are recycled and many more are left in piles. Thus waste
management & disposal is becoming a threat to the environment and a major contributor to
global warming and climate change.
Recycling is developing at baby footstep speed in Mauritius. While kitchen waste contribute
most of the total disposed waste, the total waste was numbered to around 415 000 tonnes in
2011 and expecting to reach 500 000 by 2040.
At the Plaine lauzun Industrial estate ( this is situated at the entrance of the port Louis), one
comes across dye houses, detergent, soap as well as chemical manufacturers, food canning,
galvanizing as well as ethanol distilleries among many. These industries make use of 5000m3
of the available water and the effluents are discharged into the sea causing pollution. Such
discharges affect the marine ecology, like causing a high rate of death among fishes. The
death of fishes could be because of the hot discharge of the effluents. Mauritius is known for
its diving sites. The marine ecology has to be preserved. Pollution of the sea waters has to be
controlled in order to ensure that the survival of aquatic life remains intact.
Concept & Objectives

During the induction program they will get an overview of the country and will get more
acquainted with the NGOs and places they will be working for the coming 6 weeks. The
opening ceremony of the project will consist of a round table discussion among the
international participants about pollution in their respective countries and how is it tackled
and also they will have to prepare a small presentation. The discussion will also include to
