Matter, Matters!
Objective: Students will be able to identify the three states of matter and their different
properties. Procedure:
Teacher will read Why Does Matter Matter? written by Kelly Hashway to the class.
Next, students will read Why Does Matter Matter silently with a pencil (writing down
anything that stands out to them.)
Students will read the book a third time, but this time with a partner. After reading they will
work together to answer questions on worksheet provided.
Teacher will place 6 pieces of chart paper around the room, each with a different title: (Solid,
Liquid, Gas, Matter, Molecules, Properties of Matter.)
Students will circulate to each poster and spend about 1 minute to write as much as they
remember about each topic without repeating previous ideas from other students.
After the rotation activity, the teacher will hang the charts at the front of the room and invite
discussion.
If there is anything that clearly does not belong or students disagree over, put a question mark
next to it. The charts will be used as a reference the rest of the unit.
Assessment: Students will be given an exit ticket. What are the three states of matter? Give a
property of each.
