Experience Four: ...

It Was Against the Rule political cartoon

Purpose: Students will develop own feelings on Racial Justice and The Civil Rights Movement.
Essential Question: What movements from history or present day are similar to the Civil Rights
Movement?

-To begin class, we will pass around the cartoon, ...It Was Against the Rule.
-Students will write their reflections and emotions below the cartoon.
-We will discuss the symbolism behind the poem and how it depicts the Brown vs. Board of
Education court decision made by the Supreme Court.
-Students will get into groups of 2-3 and research a present day court case that relates the fight
for equality.
-Once a court case is chosen, students will then create their own political cartoon based on their
research.
-Students will have to at least have two images that symbolize particular people or groups
involved in the case.
