DANGWA FLOWER MARKET

Dimasalang Rd, Sampaloc, Manila, Metro Manila, Philippines

Is a popular fresh flower market in Metro Manila. It is composed of more than 50 stalls set-up
along Dos Castillas and other parallel streets in Dimasalang Considered a center of flower retail
in the Metro; Dangwa showcases the richness of floral products in Luzon. A wide range of
blooms are offered day in and day out, from roses, zinnias, marigolds, and chrysanthemums,
to anthuriums, gerberas, daisies, and tulips. Rare flowers can also be bought at some select stores
here but have to be ordered at least a week before needed. While most of the stalls cater
particularly to individual customers, there are also wholesale flower retailers in the area that
answer to large orders. Some bigger flower shops even accept deliveries. Ornamental petals and
leaves, floral supplies and decors, and accessories like laces and ribbons are also.

The flower market is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is generally believed that the best
time to go to there is between 1 and 3 o'clock in the morning when fresh stocks of flowers have
just arrived. Some experienced customers of the flower market however hold that fresh blooms
are unloaded in Dangwa as early as 8 to 10 in the evening; hence the best time to buy is a few
hours before midnight.

ABOUT DANGWA FLOWER MARKET:

In the mid-1970s, a number of flower sellers set up shop in a residential area beside a bus
terminal called Dangwa Tranco in Sampaloc, Manila. Almost 40 years after the opening of the
Dangwa Flower Market, business is, literally, always in bloom.

Buses coming from Benguet province in Cordillera would deliver loads of flowers including
roses, chrysanthemums and statice or sea-lavender on a regular basis; these would then be
purchased wholesale by various florists in the city. The stalls that once kept to the immediate
vicinity of the bus station have spread out to three streets: Lacson Avenue, Dimasalang and Laon
Laan.

Aside from highland blooms, cut flowers from Laguna, Tagaytay and Davao are also readily
available. There are now more flower varieties being sold in Dangwa, with imported blooms
coming from Thailand and Holland.

Theater production designer and scenographer Gino Gonzales said that Dangwa is the place to
go for flowers not found in the country, such as long-stemmed Ecuador roses, stargazers and
peonies.

TIME:

Regular customers know that the flowers are delivered at night, so they make it a point to go to
Dangwa at the exact time. The worst time to go, said Gonzales, is the eve before the
bagsakan when the old stocks are still there. The flowers still look okay but they wont last as
long, he noted.
