Analysis
By Jasmine Aldridge
Peace are an English indie rock quartet,
formed in Worcester. The band consists of
brothers Harry (vocals, guitar) and Sam Koisser
(bass), Doug Castle (guitar) and Dom Boyce
(drums). The band began to receive critical
acclaim in early 2012 from publications such
as The Guardian and NME, who compared them
to The Maccabees, Foals, Wu Lyf and Vampire
Weekend. They were considered part of the B-
Town movement, along with other bands such
as Swim Deep, Jaws and Superfood.

Their first single, "Follow Baby", was self-

released in April 2012 in the form of 500 7"
vinyl copies. The band then signed to Columbia
Records & released their debut extended play,
EP Delicious, on 7 September 2012. With their
debut studio album, In Love, released on 25
March 2013, the band released their lead single
"W raith" on 13 January 2013. It was announced
by the BBC on 9 December 2012 that Peace
had been nominated for the Sound of 2013
poll.

Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics
Peace- World Pleasure
The genre of this video is very typical for an indie/alternative music video because it
is performance based with some reference to narrative. The performance style for
this music genre is very conventional for a band because it allows the audience to
see all the band members at once, in their natural stage presence. The performance
style portrays the bands passion and musical talent, which makes the video more
enjoyable for the audience to watch. The style of dancing e.g. Harry at the start is
dancing in a relaxed manner with his guitar, demonstrates the indie/alternative
genre because it emphasises the stereotypical related connotations that indie music
videos usually have. The narrative aspect to this video is humorous and quite
random for example when harry is dressed up as a Margret Thatcher drinking milk,
this style also demonstrates the indie/alternative genre because it reinforces the
relaxed atmosphere that is present in indie music videos.

At the start of the music video the lighting is quite dull and dark which is very typical for
an indie/alternative music video. This lighting makes the video appear more atmospheric
and demonstrates the relaxed nature of the indie music genre. The lighting becomes
more ambient/natural when the camera performs close ups of the band members to
highlight their passion for their music and their individual emotions when performing the
song. There are strip lights positioned behind the band, which is very typical for an
indie/alternative music video because that genre usually focus more on lighting then
actions. The lighting is quite blue toned, which fits well within the overall aesthetic of the
video, which demonstrates the indie/alternative genre because indie music videos are
usually very colour coordinated. Towards the end of the video the lighting becomes very
dark and there is a spotlight highlighting certain people. This type of lighting enables the
audience to focus on one aspect of the video easily. Then the lighting turns very colourful
changing the aesthetic into a bright and vivid scheme, this is very typical because it
allows the audience to stay interested in the video and watch till the end.
The editing throughout the music video is very smooth which follows the smooth sound of the
indie/alternative genre music. Also the cuts within the music video follow the pace of the music,
increasing and decreasing to the page of the beat, this is very typical for an indie genre music video.
The camera shots used throughout the video are very typical for a music video because there are
long and wide shots showing the entire band as a unit and then close up and extreme close up
shots to show each band member individually. This is conventionally used because it allows to the
audience to see the band playing together and then see each members emotions separately. The
camera follows the main singer (Harry Koisser) because he is the star of the band meaning its more
effective for the camera to follow him more than the other band members. This is very typical for
indie/alternative bands because the camera does usually focus on the main singer, due to them
usually being the most liked. The camera throughout the entire video is hand held, meaning that
the shots are slightly shaky and the camera pans instead of cutting to different shots. This is typical
for most music video regardless of the genre because it makes the video appear like it is slightly in
the beat of the music. There are some special effects used such as: reflection, slow motion and
coloured lighting effects. It is typical for music videos to have effects especially for the
indie/alternative genre because it makes the video more visually exciting to the audience.

The styling of this music video is very thought out due to the overwhelming colour
palette being: yellow, blue and black. This is a very typical colour palette for a
indie/alternative band because they usually have some dark colours like blue and black
and then add a pop of colour such as yellow. Also this colour combination is very typical
for Peace because they usually wear these colours for photo shoots as a band. They all
have a relaxed messy look, which massively demonstrates the indie/alternative genre
because this is very typical styling- in casual baggy fitting clothes and long un-brushed
hair. All the band members are styled in casual clothing however they are each wearing
different things which suggests that they are trying to present their personalities within
the choice of clothing. This is typical for the indie/alternative genre because most band
members have different tastes in fashion. Also it makes the video more visual for the
audience because they have more to look at.
There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals- The
lyrics are represented with images

Aching, aching everywhere, I don't feel it, you don't Please don't send me off to war: The visual peace Let it be: The band member is presented as being

tones of the lyrics, which enhances the meaning. Also and symbolises this lyric making reference to the floor, which visually conveys this lyric because he is
due to Harry being positioned on the floor, relates the values of the band being peace not war. Also due to making a stand and showing that it should be left. Also
visual representation that he is aching because he is the other band members not being in focus, makes the the dark ambient lighting portrays this lyric due to it

World's pleasure: This visually presents world peace Raise your hand, If you've five fingers, take a bow: The lyric Good-looking: The dressed up male band member as a

member has his hands slightly raised as well as the sword raised appear attractive. This gives a humorous edge to the
swords making a mockery of fighting. This also adds a in the air. The lyric take a bow suggests that because he is
humorous edge to the video, giving a deeper message video because it is unusual. Also it makes a mockery of
causing harm to the pineapple, it isn't something to be proud of
that fighting is pointless and peace is the better option. which makes him unable to bow. This reinforces the whole Margret Thatcher because he is dressed up to look like
message of the song that peace is better than violence. her.

The style of this music video is performance based with elements of narrative. Due to the video being majority performance based, it was difficult to see a relationship
between the lyrics and the visuals. This meant that there are not many relationships that I could pick up on because the narrative elements are quite disjunctive in
relevance to the lyric being said. However the narrative shots did fit within the overall theme of the video, making it all relevant to the bigger issue. On average the
lyrics had a relationship with: the lighting, actions of the band members and the positioning in the clip. Due to the lyrics not having a direct relationship to the visuals it
makes the audience more interested to find out the meaning of things because they are not directly clear at first glance.
There is a relationship between music and visuals. The tone and
atmosphere of the visual reflects that of the music
There is a clear relationship between music and visuals in the music video
connecting clearly to the tone and atmosphere. The dancing at the start of
the video is a soft bopping which syncs with the pace and tone of the
music. This makes the video visually flow with the music played, which
makes the atmosphere of the video very appealing. The tone of the video
at the beginning is quite dark and emotional because they are trying to get
a strong statement of peace to the audience. This tone visually also
matches the soft beat of the music which makes the beginning very
enticing to the audience. The editing of the video visually matches the beat
of the music, meaning when the beat increases there are more edits and
shots, so then when the beats slows there are less edits. This is very typical for an indie/alternative music video because their beats usually vary in
speed. Throughout the video the audience can see every band member performing in one shot together, meaning that the visual appearance of this
matches all the individual sounds which make up the song. This creates a relationship between the two making the video more appealing to the
audience because they can identify who is planning which part of the song. Due to close ups of the different instruments, it makes the music appear like
it is being played live which makes a more enjoyable atmosphere for the audience. A relaxed tone is created due to the band members subtly dancing to
the beat of the music at the start of the video, a cool atmosphere is created because the band isn't taking the video too seriously and visually look
comfortable/natural in front of the camera. In the majority of the video Harry is lip syncing to the music being played, which creates a strong relationship
between the music and visuals.
The mise en scene plays a large part in the tone and atmosphere and the video because it is what makes up the visual look of the video. For example the
lighting is a key part in making the tone and atmosphere of a video because different lighting gives different impressions. This is evident in this video
because the lighting at the start of the video is very dull to connote the importance of the issue they are tackling through the lyrics of the video. Then
the lighting changes to no lighting and just a spotlight to identify the different instruments relating to the music playing in that shot. This connotes a
dramatic and harsh atmosphere. Then the lighting drastically changes to bright vivid colours which range from orange-purple. This type of
lighting drastically changes the tone and atmosphere to a happy and joyful
atmosphere. This is because colours represent happiness and personality. This
visual effect relates to the tone of the music because it becomes very upbeat
compared to the slow pace it was when the lighting had gone.
Also in the final part of the video there is an addition of white balloons which
create a upbeat atmosphere and creates a relationship with the music
because they float at the same pace as the music. This creates a very unusual
and enticing appearance for the audience. These types of mise en scene are
very typical for indie/alternative genre music videos, especially performance
videos because they add interest for the audience.
The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups for
the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a
visual style)

The demands for a record label is very obvious in this music video because there are lots of close ups of the band equally throughout the
entire video. Also due to Peace being relatively well known in the music industry, they need to include a large amount of close ups to build
their band profile and to make the audience more familiar of their facial features, to get them more popularity. The majority of the close up
shots are of the main singer Harry, this is to make him stand out from the band because he is predominately the star image in the band.
Also it allows the audience to build more of a connection to each band member because they can
identify them and further on, view them as a role model. Due to the record label it is clear that they
have tried and succeeded in making an indie feel video with retro lighting and indie clothing, they did
this because they want to attract the biggest and please the biggest audience possible. They also meet
the demand of the record label of not looking directly at the camera in some close up shots because it
gives the audience the illusion that they are watching the performance live.
There is a visual style motif that is recurring in most of Peaces music videos which is the bands
great sense of performance. This is due to the fact most of Peaces music videos are
performance based which meant they have had lots of practice. This usually consists of Harry
dancing (in front of the camera with a mid shot or close up) in a relaxed manner effectively
presenting the indie/alternative genre.
There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within
screens, mirrors, stages etc.) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of
the female body
The notion of looking is used highly in this music video through the use of close
up shots of the members in the band. Only the main singer produces eye
contact in the music video. This is because the type of looking creates a direct
relationship with the audience making them more attracted to the music video
as whole. In addition this technique makes the audience feel more involved in
the music video because they are making eye contact with the artist. As well as
this the notion of looking (when the artist looks away from the camera) is used
highly, however mainly by the other band members. This is effective because it
makes the performance more authentic and gives the audience the impression
that the video is live. This also helps the audience recognise the performance
aspect, for example they pay more attention to the instruments. Also it shows
the audience that the other band members are not as important as the main
singer- Harry because they are not making direct eye contact with the audience.
As well as this it suggests that by using this notion of looking it gives the
impression that the band wants to build a bigger connection with the lead
singer rather than the other band members because they are not the bands
image.

The notion of looking is further highlighted through the use of a mirror. This
makes the audience more interested in the video because the mirror gives the
illusion that the band members are positioned behind the audience due to the
reflection. Also it makes the shot more distorted, making the audience pay more
attention to the video.

The females shown in the video are not treated voyeuristically because they are
wearing casual clothes which do not show any skin, which means there body
isn't the focus. However they are wearing makeup which could support the male
gaze slightly because they look attractive, but not as much as pop videos from
artists such as Rihanna.
The artist may develop motifs or iconography that recur
across their work (a visual style)
Worlds Pleasure Lost On Me
All of Peaces videos are very different in concept and
dont really have any obvious motifs or iconography
that recur, however there is some continuity in the
visual look of the band themselves and their style.
Their videos range through different styles e.g.
narrative and performance style, also a mixture of the
two. One piece of iconography is the visual styling of
the band i.e. the way they are dressed. This is because
in the majority of their music videos they are dressed
in relaxed, slightly scruffy looking clothes, which
present the indie genre visually- attracting the
audience. One thing that is obvious throughout all of
the music videos is that Harry is in all the shots. This is
because Harry is the lead singer, meaning he is the

Gen Strange
main image of peace. Also it enables the audience to
Money have a stronger connection to the lead singer, which
will ensure the audience will easily identify music
videos produced by Peace. In addition the motif of
Harry always being cleverly positioned in front of the
band or slightly above them, means that he will be
more enticing to the audience- making them build a
stronger connection. This motif is present in every
music video Peace have produced, even the music
video Money which is solely narrative.
The iconography of a retro look recurs across all of
their work - either through clothing or props. This
makes the videos stand out and recognisable as a
Indie/Alternative music video. Also the iconography is
used in different ways e.g. through lighting or setting
which makes the video appear different but follows
the same retro concepts.
There are often intertextual reference (to films, TV
programmes, other music videos etc.)
There is an intertextual reference to the 80s/90s TV programme
called Spitting Image. This is an intertextual reference to the TV
programme because in the music video there is a narrative section
Peace which includes Harry (the lead singer) dressed as Margaret Thatcher,
World mocking her and making her look like a fool. This then becomes
Pleasure similar to Spitting Image because he is shown wearing a Margaret
Thatcher mask, which corresponds in an exact way to the Margaret
Thatcher puppet which was utilised in the Spitting Image TV
programme. The mocking of Margaret Thatcher is done in the same
way as Spitting Image used to do, because they are known for
mocking in a comedic way. They made very exaggerated puppets
Spitting modelled on politicians like Margaret Thatcher, which are freaky and
Image ugly looking. In addition, this shot with Margaret Thatcher is an
intertextual reference to her given name as The Milk Snatcher
which she was given by journalists in many news articles.

Another intertextual reference is the bands overall style which is

seen in a lot of other indie music videos - in bands such as Swim
Deep and Sundara Karma. The style which is referenced throughout
Swim is the typical indie look e.g. scruffy appearance, unusual clothing
Deep and long messy hair. This intertextual reference makes the music
video match the music genre, which makes it more recognisable and
popular with the audience. This then overall improves the bands
popularity.
Blossoms are an English indie pop band
from Stockport, Greater Manchester.
Formed in 2013, the band consists of
Tom Ogden (lead vocals, guitar), Charlie
Salt (bass, backing vocals), Josh
Dewhurst (lead guitar, percussion), Joe
Donovan (drums) and Myles Kellock
(keyboards, synthesizer, backing vocals).

They were on the BBC's Sound Of new

music list for 2016 where they finished
in fourth place. It was commented by
the band and several other people that
they were one of only two guitar bands
on the list, alongside Rat Boy.

The band have 2 albums (Bloom and

Blossoms) and have 10 singles (You
Pulled a Gun on Me, Blow, Cut Me and
I'll Bleed, Blown Rose, Charlemagne,
At Most a Kiss, Getaway, My Favourite
Room, Honey Sweet and This Moment).

Members: Tom Ogden, Charlie Salt, Josh Dewhurst, Joe Donovan, Myles Kellock
Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics
Blossoms- Charlemagne
This music video follows a narrative throughout the whole duration. This is
very effective because it gives the audience a creative representation of the
song and its lyrics, making the meaning more visually clear to the audience.
Due to the video being purely narrative, it is unusual not to have a
performance element, especially with the indie music genre, which makes this
music video more different and unique. There is no dancing from the band,
however the main singer is singing to the song in some parts of the video. This
lack of performance helps make the narrative flow better and appear more
like a story then a music video. The performance of the narrative makes the
audience understand that the band members are also talented in acting as
well and creating powerful music. The performance is very relaxed, which
ensures the music video fits within the indie/alternative music genre. When
the characters walk, they walk in time with the music, which demonstrates the
indie/alternative genre because most indie bands in music videos perform
some kind of action e.g. dancing to the beat of the music.

The lighting is very dark which creates a mysterious and enduring atmosphere. This
demonstrates the indie music genre because it is unique in the way the lighting gives off
a relaxed tone, due to the mixture of dark and yellow toned lighting. The yellow toned
lighting creates an aesthetic appearance with the blue decaying walls, which
demonstrates the indie genre because most indie music videos use lighting to secure a
unique aesthetic, which will please the audience. The lighting becomes brighter when
there is a close up shot of a person, especially the lead singer because it highlights there
facial expressions which is a typical feature of indie/alternative videos. Due to the
lighting being used to highlight the lead singers face, as well as the woman character, it
means that the lighting is not used to highlight the other band members which clearly
shows that the band are trying to ensure the lead singer is the point of focus for the
audience. This demonstrates the indie/alternative music genre because all indie bands
have one person (usually the lead singer) who is positioned in front of all the other band
members or are in more shots in the music video. This is effective in making the band
more recognisable to the audience because they can easily identify the lead singer. The
lighting also fades in and out to the music, which makes the video flow more effectively.
The editing is very conventional in relevance to cutting because the shots cut flowing effectively to the next
shot. The cuts increase and decrease depending on the pace of the music, which is very typical for indie music
videos because they usually have a difference in pace throughout the song. This cutting technique is very
effective because it makes the narrative video flow more like a music video, rather than a film clip. The are some
unusual editing clips which demonstrate the indie/alternative music genre because they are unique. For
example the CGI doorways twisting and the mirroring of the doorways to give a never ending look. This is very
effective in catching the audiences attention because it plays tricks with their minds and makes them pay more
attention to the effects to understand them and why they have been used. Another editing effect used is slow
motion, which is shown when the smoke dispenser is flying slowly in mid air to give a suspenseful and
mysterious feel to the video. The camera techniques are very unusual because the camera moves
uncontrollably throughout the whole video, making the audience feel dizzy and disorientated. The type of
camera movement is not typical throughout the whole music video, however it really works in this video
because it fits well within the disorientated and creepy theme this music video is suggesting. The camera
movements demonstrate the indie genre well because they are very unusual and quirky, which is what Indie is
all about. In addition throughout the entire video the camera pans in and out focusing on different things such
as the lead singer, this also adds to the disorientation that the audience feels when watching the video.

The only female in the music video is styled in a wedding dress, which is pure
white and has very intricate detailing. The woman's body is completely covered
in the dress, however the dress reveals her legs and bum but not in a sexual
nature. Due to the woman being in a dress it makes her stick out from all the
men because it makes her appear feminine and pure. As well as this she is the
only one dressed in white which also singles her out. This kind of style is unusual
for a indie music video, but due to it being a narrative performance it
demonstrates the genre well. All the men included in the band are wearing black
clothing, which gives a very mysterious and unique image because the audience
cant identify who is who due to the same overwhelming black tone. The lead
singer is styled in a black suit with a white shirt which gives a formal appearance
which keeps within the theme of the woman wearing a formal dress. The lead
singer has long scruffy hair which demonstrates the indie genre because it is very
common for indie bands to have long messy hair.

The set is styled in a very mysterious and freakish way due to the dark and old
fashioned room which features damage to the walls. This makes the audience
instantly attracted to the video because they want to find out what happens
because the setting is so unusual and holds a lot of questions. Also the special
effects of the mirrored door ways and the smoke, add to the unique qualities of
this music video, which massively demonstrates the indie/alternative music
genre because it is a one off setting. Also the setting fits well with the narrative
performance because it makes the style of the black costumes more mysterious
looking.
There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals- The
lyrics are represented with images

of her love.

There is a strong relationship between the lyrics and visuals in this music video, allowing the audience to instantly get a sense of
what the music video is about and the hidden meanings which are then revealed in the narrative performance. Due to the visuals
expressing the lyrics vividly, it makes the audience enjoy the music video because they understand what is going and how it
relates. However there are some visuals which do not have a direct relationship with the lyrics, which have been done to make the
audience more interested and invested in the video because it gets them to think how it relates.
There is a relationship between music and visuals. The tone
and atmosphere of the music
There is a clear relationship between the music and visuals
throughout the whole video. This is especially clear when the beat
of the music increases or decreases, the shots are edited together
according to the pace. This makes the video flow more effectively
especially as the visuals do not include the band members actually
performing the song, it helps the narrative performance appear
more like a music video. In addition the visual camera effects,
when the camera moves erratically in each shot, are in time to the
music creating a relationship. This makes the music video appear
more flawless and well thought out. The smoke dispenser at the start swings in time with the beat of the music, making the
atmosphere turn very mysterious and makes the audience almost feel hypnotic. The atmosphere and tone then turns quite sour and
sad when the lead singer Tom starts to sing the song, due to the music being quite downbeat. The tone gradually gets darker
throughout the video matching the beat of the music. However when the music gets to the upbeat chorus the tone becomes quite
serious and slightly happier, changing the atmosphere into a less saddening atmosphere. However the visuals do stay quite dark, due
to the lighting, which makes the atmosphere remain quite emotional. This relationship makes the video overall more endearing for the
audience to watch because of how well the relationship has been constructed. In addition the lead singer and the female actor walk in
time with the beat to make the video fit flawlessly in time. As well as this the lighting towards the end of the video fades in and out of
time with the beat making the visual shots flash on and off in time with the music. This makes the atmosphere more intense because
the way the shots fade into black builds anticipation, making the audience get excited due to it creating a build up. The visuals towards
the end of the video, for example the shot where the camera shows
the women and then it flips round to show her again. Also the shot
where the playing card is shown on fire. These visuals are very
poignant because they are shown with music rather than lyrics. This
creates a relationship between the visual shots and the music
because the tone of the music is very dramatic due to the build up at
the end of the video and the narrative is coming to an abrupt painful
end, which adds suspense for the audience.
The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups for
the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a
visual style)

The demands of the record label through the use of close ups doesnt really apply to this Cut Me and Ill Bleed Blown Rose
video because the camera focuses on the narrative, rather than close up shots of the band
and lead singer. This makes this video unique because the band are not conforming
stereotypically to the demands of the record label. However there are some close ups of
the lead singer to make sure the audience can recognise that it is a Blossoms music video.
Blossoms are a well known band, meaning they have more versatility when it comes to
conforming to the record label, due to them being popular with a wide audience. Also in all
of the close ups of the lead singer Tom, he isn't looking at the camera which adds to the
mysterious theme running through the entire video. There are no close ups of the other
band members which proves that they are focusing more on the narrative performance. Getaway Honey Sweet
There is a very clear motif which recurs across Blossoms music videos, which is that most of their videos are narrative based performances, however two music
videos have a performance element of the band performing live. The narrative changes depending on the song and lyrics. For example Charlemagne has a very
dark and mysterious narrative, due to the deep lyrics/ tone of the song. In contrast Honey Sweet has a light-hearted and relaxed narrative due to the soft beat
running throughout the song. Having more narrative based music videos allows each music video to be unique, giving the audience more pleasure when watching.
Also it allows the audience to build a better connection to the song because the narrative explains the meaning of the lyrics and gives them a visual look at what it
means.
There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens,
mirrors, stages etc.) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body
The notion of looking is shown in this music video by the woman character looking into the
camera. This ensures the audience is engaged in the narrative performance by having a
connection to the mysterious woman who has no real-life connection to the band. This
gives the impression that the music video has been constructed to make the audience feel
sympathy for the woman and respect her feelings because the notion of looking, makes
the audience feel involved- like she is looking at them for guidance. Unconventionally,
throughout the whole video, the lead singer doesnt make eye contact with the audience
and neither does the band. They are always shown looking into the distance away from
camera. This is until the whole band is shown in one shot towards the end of the music
video making eye contact with the audience. This makes the audience replenish their
strong relationship with the band, however not ruin the narrative. The fact the band
doesnt make any eye contact with the camera, gives a more realistic experience for the
audience because it gives the impression of normal interaction- also this is well crafted to
keep the music video in a narrative form.

There is a frequent reference to the notion of looking through the use of lighting. This is
present towards the lead singer and the woman. When they are in shot the lighting
appears to highlight them over the other band members and actors. This draws the
audience to their attention because they are the main people in the music video, so the
lighting enables them to build the strongest relationship with them. This lighting is very
noticeable due to the video being dark, making it very obvious to the audience.

The notion of looking in regards to the subtle voyeuristic treatment of the female body
relating the female character in the music video. She dresses in a wedding gown which is
very sheer and reveals her buttocks in a few shots. This is supported by Laura Mulveys
male gaze theory, where woman are put into music videos (and other media) for the sole
purpose to please men and also attract them to watching this. This is present in this video
because even though the woman has a large part in the narrative performance, the
camera lingers on her body and follows her around instead of the band. This shows that
the music video is trying to attract a male and female audience by showing the woman and
the band members. However the woman's dress isn't too revealing, but does cling to the
woman's curves and figure making her look very feminine. Including a female in a male
orientated band music video is very typical because it gives a feminine touch making a
female audience attracted and gives men pleasure, so it also attracts a male audience.
The artist may develop motifs or iconography that recur across their
work (a visual style)
Charlemagne Blown Rose There are certain elements which recur across
Blossoms music videos. One type of iconography
which is recurring across all of Blossoms videos
is the bands style, for example their long scruffy
looking hair and there unique Indie clothes. This
iconography recurs because it is the kind of
image that an audience would relate to the
indie/alternative music genre. Toms hair is long
and messy which adds to his relaxed persona,
also presenting the indie theme. In addition the
way Tom holds himself in his music videos
visually is very similar because he has a straight
back and sings passionately to the camera.
These iconography features make their videos
more recognisable to the audience and make
Honey Sweet Getaway them stand out in the indie/alternative genre.

Another motif that Blossoms use over all of their

videos is that they usually include a woman
actor, even if they are just in one shot like in
Honey Sweet. They use this motif because the
woman adds a feminine feel to the video,
making the videos more likely to attract a
feminine audience. Also any other character
(other than the band) enable the narrative to be
more realistic and interesting to the audience
because they usually use different woman each
time, which makes each video more realistic.
There are often intertextual reference (to films, TV programmes, other
music videos etc.)
There are not many intertextual
references in this music video because
it is very unique in the concept
because it relates directly to the
interpretation of the lyric writer. This
means that the visuals and narrative
structure have been constructed from
the song, which means there has been
a creative response.

However there is an intertextual

reference to the 1994 Maverick film,
within some shots of the music video.
For example the whole set up of the
men around the table gambling, with
hats on takes inspiration from the film.
In addition when Tom throws the card
on the table so does Maverick in the
film. This intertextual link makes the
music video more intriguing because it is not a very conventional link due to it not being an exact copy, which means it is harder
to spot. The music video is slightly different to the visual intertextual reference, but it is the same in concept. It is slightly different
because the music video is more modern looking due to the high quality visuals and the modern garments. In addition in
Maverick there is a woman sitting at the table, as well as this the concept of the game is slightly different, but they are both still
considered card games. Also the lighting is very different because in Maverick the lighting is very bright and ambient, but in the
music video the lighting is very dark and eerie-which makes the game look more serious and life-threatening.

It is difficult to notice any intertextual references to any music videos because the video is a narrative performance solely suited
for Charlemagne the song, which means it is hard to find any elements that have been duplicated/referenced. In addition the
whole video is an unusual concept, due to it not being urban and trendy like music videos are in the 21st century.

Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics
Dope Lemon- Home Soon
This music video focuses on performance rather than narrative through the
use of instruments and lip syncing. This makes the video demonstrate the
indie/alternative genre because most indie/alternative music videos have a
performance element because it allows the audience to feel like they are at a
live performance. In the video the band members dance to the beat of the
music by bopping with their instruments, this demonstrates the
indie/alternative genre because this is the typical way that they dance to the
beat of their music in videos. This performance is typical for an
indie/alternative genre music video because there is a stage set up for the
band to play their music. This gives the audience a realistic experience because
they feel like they are watching it first hand. In addition each band member
has an instrument which they are performing on, which shows the passion the
band has for music-which is very typical for the indie/alternative genre.

The lighting towards the start of the video is very bright and ambient
giving off a summery and welcoming feel to the beginning. The lighting
reflects the happiness of the band and girls in the video, making it an
upbeat song for the audience. This kind of lighting isn't very typical of
the indie/alternative genre because the conventional lighting for indie
music videos is quite dark, however indie videos are all about unique
aspects. The lighting becomes slightly darker but still ambient when
inside the graffiti house. This is due to the use of natural lighting rather
than studio lights. Natural lighting makes the video appear more
realistic for the audience, making them enjoy the video more. The
natural lighting create subtle shadowing on the main singer Anguss
face, which gives him a mysterious side that is more likely to entice the
audience.
The editing is quite slow paced to match the slow tone of the music, which clearly
demonstrates the indie genre because it has been purposely edited to the song. There
are also edited shots where there is not music to the visual, which is very effective in
making the video flow and more interesting for the audience. There are camera effects
such as slow motion used in this video when the paint balls are thrown at the band to
enhance the splash of colour and makes it more visually exciting for the audience. This
is also very effective because the slow motion effect enables the shots to be in time
with the music. The camera pans and moves to focus on certain people, which makes
the video flow and appear in time with the music. This is typically used in indie videos
because it is the best way to film performance stage videos. The camera performs a
few close ups of the band but the camera mainly focuses on the lead singer and the
girls in the video. This is typical for an indie/alternative video because the close ups
allow the audience to build relationships with the band and any others in the video.
When all of the people in the video are dancing to the music, the camera is hand held
so it appears like the camera is moving with the people. This is effective because it
makes the audience feel like they are there dancing with them.

All of the people shown in the video are styled in causal vintage looking clothing, which
aesthetically go together. This demonstrates the indie music genre because this kind of
style is very typical of indie fashion. The three girls positioned outside of the house at
the start are styled in clothing which matches the colours of the exterior of the house
and the natural environment. Also they are styled in very tight fitting, skimpy clothing
which shows of their body, linking in with the male gaze theory. The jazz players are
styled in normal casual clothing with unusual hats. This fits with the unusual indie styling
of the video, making it appeal to their target audience. Also the band members apart
from the lead singer have unusual sunglasses on, which shows that they want the
audience to create a connection with the lead singer due to him being the bands image.
The styling of the balloons filled with paint is very effective because it adds that much
needed colour and personality, which all indie music videos have. Also it goes with there
aesthetic with the styled graffiti in the background of their shots. The styled look of
Angus is very scruffy and massively demonstrates the indie music genre because all
indie lead singers have this specific appearance. The setting of the video is very effective
because it fits within their aesthetic and demonstrates the indie genre because it is one
off/unique.
There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals- The
lyrics are represented with images

To be bored out of my mind: This lyric relates to the visual I don't have the time to play: The visual is one of the women So won't you come home soon: The visual is one of the
because compared to the few shots before this one, they were throwing a balloon filled with paint over another women women running through the doorway of the house. There

However in this shot the colours are very muted and appear shows the women playing, not the lead singer saying he doesnt it has been made to look like she is coming home because
boring. Also this visual and lyric tells the audience that the have time. In addition it relates to the lyric because it is

video is going to become more fun and unpredictable. showing that other people, but himself have time to play.

I never wish for you to go: In this shot the visual shows all of the Lost in that old world: The visual shows a balloon filled with
band and extra people in the music video are dancing and having coloured paint being thrown at the lead singer and him ducking
fun. This relates to the lyric because it is suggesting the lead slightly to try and avoid it. This visual has a relationship to the
singer doesnt want them to go because they are all having fun visual because it represents the paint as the new world and
and enjoying themselves due to them being very energetic and because the lead singer is trying to avoid it, suggests to the
interacting with each other. audience that he is lost in an old world.

It was quite difficult to find many substantial relationships between the lyrics and the visuals because the shots were relatively random
to the specific lyric lines, this meant that I had to read quite deeply into the meaning of the lyric and then relate it to the visual. Also the
fact that the whole song is only 14 lines of lyrics because most of it is instrumental, meant that there wasnt many visual-lyric
relationships. Also the fact the video is very unusual in the way of objects and costumes that dont correlate to the lyrics of the song.
There is a relationship between music and visuals. The tone
and atmosphere of the music
There is a clear relationship between music and visuals in this
music video because everything within the video has been
purposely put in time of the music. For example the
instruments which can be identified within the music are
being played by the band in the music video. This shows a
relationship between the music and the visuals because the
audience can obviously see the band performing the music
visually in the video. In addition the dancing of the band and
the girls in the video matches the slow swaying beat of the
music. Visually it looks very aesthetic because it makes the
video flow and makes the atmosphere very light-hearted and happy, which reflects on the audience. Similarly to this, there is a
relationship between the music and the splashing of the paint. This has been constructed by making the shots slow motion to
match the slow paced song. This makes the atmosphere turn more fun and vibrant due to the bright colours and the
unpredictability of the paint.

Also when the music stops all of the dancing in the visuals stops, which makes the video flow, creating an enjoyable atmosphere
for the audience to watch. The camera shots filming the video e.g. panning has visually been timed to the beat of the music to
give the illusion for the audience that they are in the video watching from a first hand experience. This makes the atmosphere of
the video very relaxing because the camera moves in a very slow
manner (due to the tone of the music) which makes the
audience more aware of what is occurring in the video. In
addition the slow camera shots are quite a harsh contrast to the
splashing of the paint because they are quite violent and are
quick bursts, which contrasts the calming tone of the video. As
the music builds the visuals become more intense, for example -
the song builds up to when the lead singer is singing, to when
the girls start to come into the house and throw paint at them.
The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups for
the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a
visual style)

The demands of a record label through the use of close up isn't very evident in this video, as the most of the
close ups focus on the girls having a fun time and throwing paint. This shows that Dope Lemon is trying to stand
out as more of a quirky artist because he is not conforming to the demands of the record label. However there Honey Bones
are a few close up shots of the lead singer, to reinforce the bands image and make the music video more
recognisable. This means that the band does conform to record label slightly but not in as much detail as the
other music videos that I have analysed. Dope lemon as a band are not very well known in the Indie music
industry due to them being quite new. This means that they should conform to the record label in detail, making
sure they include many close up shots of the lead singer, to ensure they will increase in popularity due to them
creating a stronger relationship with the audience. However they oppose this by making the video focus more
on the girls and the band members rather than solely on the lead singer.
Coyote
There is a visual motif which recurs across Dope Lemons work. The motif is the fact there is always a focus on
random girls in his videos, usually around three attractive girls. This is used because the girls add a feminine feel
to the video making the video more than likely to attract a larger female audience than without them. Also the
video is more likely to attract a larger male audience as well because of the male gaze theory.
There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens,
mirrors, stages etc.) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body

There is a strong frequent reference to the notion of looking present in this video. This is present massively through the voyeuristic treatment of the female body. For
example the girls in the video are wearing very tight fitting shorts with crop tops/revealing tops. This relates to the male gaze theory because a male audience would
get pleasure watching this kind of video because the women are dressed in revealing clothing-giving a voyeuristic impression. In addition to this treatment of women
follows through to the positioning of the women, for example at the start of the video, the women are positioned with the legs slightly open whilst sitting on the steps
leading up to the main set. This is utilised at the start of the music video because it will instantaneously attract a male audience, due to them sitting in a sultry manner
in skimpy clothing. The frequent reference to the female body follows through into the camera movements and positioning that the video uses. For example when the
woman carries out the paint balloons, the camera focuses on her lower body cutting off her head, making the audience drawn to her feminine features. This also
supports the male gaze theory. As well as this in another shot the camera focuses on one woman clutching to the other woman's waist giving a close up image of her
bust, this in particular is voyeuristic treatment of the female body, to attract and pleasure a male audience. In addition to this the cameras positioning creates a
reference to the notion of looking because when the woman are running through the corridor the camera is positioned so it can get a close up picture of their buttocks
when they run through the door. As well as this when the girls throw paint at each other the camera focuses on where it is thrown, most are thrown at their chests
meaning the camera focuses on their bust. Also when all the girls are gathered with the band, the camera focuses on the girls bodies when they sultrily dance to the
music.

Another reference to the notion of looking is through the use of one piece of eye contact, which is when one of the women look directly into the camera for a few
seconds. This creates a bond with the audience and keeps them interested and involved in the music video. There is no other evidence of eye contact in the video
which is very unusual because the lead singer usually makes lots of eye contact with the camera in a performance video. This makes the video more unique, making
the audience feel more intrigued to watch it intently.
The artist may develop motifs or iconography that recur across their
work (a visual style)
Home Soon Honey Bones
There isn't many obvious motifs or iconography that
recurs across Dope Lemons music videos because they
are all so unique. This is due to them constructing the
music video to fit with the lyrics of the song rather than
using identifiable iconography. This conveys how unique
Dope Lemon is because they dont conform to the
typical indie band because they dont have a particular
style of video, it relies totally on the song.

However there is one kind of iconography which is easily

identifiable to the audience-the appearance of Angus
the lead singer. Angus has a very unique, recognisable
appearance which shows clearly his personality. He has a
long scruffy looking beard as well as long messy hair,
which gives him a very scruffy appearance- representing
visually the indie music genre. As well as this, his
clothing which is different in all of his videos is very

Coyote Marinade
unique and looks very vintage, which corresponds with
his unkempt appearance. The iconography appears to
the audience that he doesn't care about his appearance
because his sole purpose and passion in life is his music-
which makes the audience more intrigued to watch his
music videos.

A motif which recurs across Dope lemons work is that all

of his videos have elements which are filmed outside.
This is effective in making their music videos appear like
a series, which makes them more enjoyable to watch for
the audience. Also the fact this motif, is used highly in
other music videos because the images always look
better quality and more dramatic if filmed outside. Also
the outside setting goes well with Anguss rustic voice
and the unique beat to the music.
There are often intertextual reference (to films, TV
programmes, other music videos etc.)
There are not many intertextual
references in this video because it is quite
random and the visuals relate massively
to the lyrics. However the whole concept
of throwing paint onto each other is
highly used intertextually in films and
other music videos.

For example there is a strong intertextual

reference to the 1985 film called
Rainbow War (Film) Rainbow War. The reference is
through the visuals of the music video, this is because both the film
and video have a similar concept of throwing paint on each other. The
paint throwing in both the music video and film is in quite a violent
manner due to the reference of war. Also the film uses primary
colours such as blue, red and yellow. The music video also uses these
colours, which shows there is a clear reference between the film and
music video.
There is also an intertextual reference to the Undivided- War Paint
music video. The reference is also visual in the way the Undivided
band are similarly set up in a staged band position playing their
instruments, whilst getting paint splattered all over them. This is very
similar to the visual of the Dope Lemon band getting paint splattered
Undivided- War Paint (music video) onto them, whilst playing their instruments.
