Opening remark by Devatop Board Chair, Bar. Carol Ndaguba

(Former NAPTIP Boss)
In an opening remark, Bar. Carol
Ndaguba said: World Day Against
Trafficking in Persons (WDATP) is a call
to end human trafficking and give hope
to the victims who often live
unrecognized among us. This is also a
period to get private sectors,
individuals, organizations and
government to support the fight against
human trafficking through donations and
sponsorship.
Around the world, criminals are selling people for profit. Vulnerable women and girls
form the majority of human trafficking victims. According to U.S Department of State,
Nigeria is a source, transit, and destination country for women and children subjected to
trafficking in persons including forced labor and forced prostitution. Nigeria is among
the countries that have the highest number of human trafficking victims. Human
traffickers or perpetrators often see young people, especially women, girls and
children as commodities that can generate 100 times of the amount spent on recruiting
them.
This crime generates an estimated $32 billion dollars each year for the traffickers
according to United Nations. It ought to be everyone's concern. Everyone has a role to
play in combating this monstrous crime- crime against humanity.

Devatop Centre for Africa Development has taken a bold step by engaging young
people in combating human trafficking. Today, we have very passionate youth who
are willing to take strategic actions to end this modern day slavery. Devatop has
continued to lead a strong movement of young people in Nigeria against trafficking in
persons. This needs to be sustained through consistent funding and support from private
sector and government.
Today, we are appealing to businesses, philanthropists, captains of industries to adopt
anti-human trafficking project as their corporate social responsibilities.
Together we can end human trafficking.
Thank you.

While responding to media interview, Mr. Osuigwe stated: Human trafficking
cannot be eradicated by signing a bill, but there is need for adequate funding. We
