Group 3 SAREX 24/25 August Fort Snelling Squadron

Lt Col Barney Uhlig
Change of Command
On Sat, we about 55 members (about ½ officers, ½
cadets), on Sun we had only about 40 total. Sat
were 4 AC, Sun 3. On the macro level, the training
objective was an increase of SAR mission readiness,
including cooperation with the USCG Aux. On an in-
dividual level, we attempted to get as many members
signed off on their 101T forms on as many ground
and air tasks as possible.

30 air sorties were conducted as well as 17 ground

sorties.

Thanks to all those officers who helped to make last

weekend's SAREX a success, including Lt Stepanek
(NHS, Bs commandant), Lt Matson (Viking, planner),
Maj Volding (NHS, Air Ops), Capt Wilberg (Wg,
Comm), Maj Nicosia (NHS, Ground Ops, Comm),
and Lt Col Carlson (NHS, planner).

Although we had fewer AC than expected due to

maintenance, all participants, both on the ground and
in the air, put in a respectable performance.

Duluth Composite Squadron Achieves Aerospace Excellence

Capt Mary Beth Boynton

On Thursday evening July 25th Duluth Composite Squadron received the Aerospace Excellence Award for
2002. This is the fourth time in five years that the squadron has achieved this award under the direction of
Squadron Aerospace Education Officer, Capt. Mary Beth Boynton.

The Squadron has worked on this award since the beginning of the year. Our main focus this year was
rockets and space travel. Some of what we explored during the award period was what equipment would be
needed if we were on the moon. Members spent most of an evening discussing why carrying oxygen cylin-
ders would be more important than carrying fire wood or match Another evening we discussed directional
control of aircraft and how it differed from directional control of spacecraft. We made this a touch learning
experience by making paper airplanes and flying them to a specified point in the room. Cadets adjusted ai-
lerons and rudders of their airplanes to attempt to achieve some control over the plane trajectory.

Duluth Model Rocketry Day

Capt Mary Beth Boynton

On June 29, 2002 we gathered for a day of model rocketry at the Boynton’s.

We began in the morning with a lesson about thrust and directional control in space. The cadets then built
and launched their own rockets. During the building of the rockets we discussed what was necessary on the
rocket and why this was added to the rocket.

The weather on June 29th was less than perfect for rocket launch and retrieval. Winds were gusting out of
the south and southwest, which necessitated that many adjustments in trajectory. With the gusting winds
there were also many trips into the surrounding brush and forest to retrieve rockets.

Even with the weather not in our favor the day became a success with 11 cadets qualifying for model
rocketry badges.
