Reading Expectations

Reading this year will includes various themed units, essential questions, rigorous texts,
comprehension/sorting questions, significant tasks, difficulty tasks, interpretive questions,
habits of thinking, writing tasks, language study, retrospective work, and formative and
summative assessments

YOU will be spending in class and out of class time reading You should have your novel on you
at all times for all classes. Only the novel that you show you are reading is accepted as the book
you will be reporting on.

Board requirement is a minimum of 25 Books read per quarter. The requirement works out to a
minimum of 6 books every 10 weeks. If you do not complete a comprehensive assessment or
book project you will receive no credit for the book. If you do not meet the required reading
there is no way of obtaining an A or B in this class.

Short Novel consist of 125-150 pages Longer Novels 250-350

By the end of 10 weeks the Board requires that you have at least 3-5 short and 2 longer

You will be given credit accordingly: Every 125 pages will count as a book

You are required to keep a Reading Response Log-simply respond to what you are
reading by completing stems like these. I thought, I feel, I wonder, I predict, I connected,
I was surprised, I You may talk back to character, Ask
questions????, write letters to them etc.

DEAR Time will be scheduled in class daily. You will allowed time to read silently for 20
minutes. This will be tied into your reading grade. DEAR means Drop Everything and
READ, this means in the middle of what you are doing literally drop it and start reading.

Your Reading choices must show a reflection of Genres , Newspaper Analysis and
Magazine Articles are highly encouraged.

Writing Expectations
Writing will take place daily: journals, reading responses, extended responses, essays, research,
etc. You will be expected to pass a writing exam every 10 weeks.

Argument Writing 1st Quarter Narrative Writing-2nd Quarter

Informational 3rd Quarter Creative Writing 4th quarter

Speaking Expectations
Speaking is effective oral communication with an emphasis on speech preparation..You will
have the opportunity to practice and enhance your skills in a safe environment. You will
prepare and deliver a variety of formal and informal speeches that include personal
introduction, informative, slide show presentations as well as persuasive and argument
speeches. You will participate in debates and selected dramatic performances. Attention will be
given to development of these fundamental skills:

Outline preparation
Use of attention grabbers
Proper thesis construction
Eye contact
Vocal changes
Natural body movements
Organization of information and supporting material
Awareness of timing
Speaking Grades will be given weekly

Listening Expectations
Listening is a skill and you probably spend more time using than any other kind of skill. Like other skills, listening takes
practice. You will have at least 1-2 active listening assignment per week. What does it mean to really listen? Real listening is
an active process that has three basic steps:

Hearing. Hearing just means listening enough to catch what the speaker is saying.. If you
can repeat the fact, then you have heard what has been said.
Understanding. The next part of listening happens when you take what you have heard
and understand it in your own way.
Judging. After you are sure you understand what the speaker has said, think about
whether it makes sense. Do you believe what you have heard?
Listening Grade you will receive one grade per week. For each assignment you will be
asked to respond in writing and you will be given a rubric.

Research Expectations
Plagiarism will automatically result in a ZERO. Plagiarism is any words that are not your own and
are directly taking from someone else. All papers should be written in your own words and if
you are quoting someone elses material you must cite properly. Two major Research Papers
will be given per quarter. Grades will be entered along the process. Please adhere to due dates
of progress on work. Research is not just printing something from the Internet the work must
be digested and be from a credible site. Research will be conducted on a weekly basis.
Randomly checking out other websites is not actual research. You will be asked to conduct
short assignments as well as one major project paper every five weeks. Full guidelines and
expectation will be given in writing along with rubric prior to assignment

Reading and Writing Expectations


The majority of assignments will be done in your interactive journals which will be stamped
daily and collected randomly. It will be given a major grade every 5 weeks. Things I should see
in your journal: A variety of strategies being used to digest material, graphic organizer, outlines,
Cornell notes, vocabulary depth etc. All projects must be neatly done with color and turned in
on time. The typing of assignments and e-mailing will be a common weekly thing. Please Keep
up with your current events they are due every Monday (Some weeks it will subject specific)
Typed 10% of your grade depends on you keeping up with whats going on in the world..

Homework Policy
Homework is always due at the beginning of class. It is your responsibility to write down the
homework that will be posted on the homework board. I will post each days assignment on
your Google classroom. It will also be your responsibility to get your assignments from your
study buddy if you are out of class during the school day for any reason or absent.
Board of Education Requirement for 6th Grade homework is 60 Minutes Per-Day(Combination of all classes)

Late Work Policy


Deadlines are firm. It is your responsibility to have your work turned in on time, in order to get
full credit. You may turn in late or missing work any day within the week it is assigned for
partial credit, but any work turned in after the week it is assigned will be given a grade of
zero.

Assignments that are one day late will be reduced 15%

two days late 25%

three days late will be reduced 50%

Absent/Absent Work Policy
When absent from school upon returning you must have a note written by your doctor or your
parent as to your whereabouts.. To receive no penalty all Absent Homework will be accepted
with a note from parent or guardian. You will be given a grace period of two days to make up
assignments.( special cases teacher will make exceptions) . Always check Google Classroom for
updates when you're out. You are responsible for making up any work you missed while absent.
Weekly assignments are posted on classroom. You are also responsible for the getting the class
notes for the days you missed from a classmate/ your study buddy

Technology Expectations
You must be able to use all the apps on Google classroom in order to complete most
assignments (drive, calendar, docs, slides, contacts, maps, news, forms, sheets)

PLEASE CREATE THE FOLLOWING FOLDERS ON DRIVE:

READING, WRITING- (LETTERS) & (ESSAYS) ,INDIVIDUALS AND SOCIETIES, RESEARCH,

PROJECTS (-NEWSPAPERS,SLIDE PRESENTATIONS, BROCHURES ETC

Handling of Technology- We must handle devices with the utmost care. It is your responsibility to never walk around with
devices unless on assignment (IPAD). We must always use appropriate language and integrity when posting work. We must
always be found to be using appropriate sites when on line. Any misuse of these privileges will result in you being banned for
using school property.

Cheating Policy
There is a zero tolerance for cheating. Students caught cheating will be given an automatic zero
on the assignment, project, quiz or test and receive a detention.
Parents will be notified
Cheating includes, but is not limited to, copying someone elses work, "lending your workbook,
notes and homework to another student, and lending knowledge of a test/quiz to another
student. Dont risk your grade and integrity
Participation
Participating in class is a requirement it is 10% of your overall grade. These points will
be awarded for the following: preparation for class, DEAR reading, Socratic Seminar,
group work, classroom participation both verbally and on written activities. discussion
participation, materials brought to class, daily work, agenda book use, productive use of class
time. Participation grades will be given at the end of each week or every 5 days.

Portfolio Expectations
Portfolios will be an integral part of this year. Test and self- selected pieces of work will be kept
in your portfolio and given back to you at the end of every ten weeks. Papers hanging up in
class will be put in portfolio when coming down. IB Portfolios are kept until the end of the year.

Report Card
Mrs. Jackson will be in charge every day and will go over her Distribution
rules and regulations. I do have a few housekeeping notes:

Uniform Policy Reminder
Come dressed daily- Refer to the handbook - If inappropriately dressed a phone call
will be made and an infraction will be given. Please be mindful when leaving home.
On Physical Education Days Proper attire must be worn . Per school rules you are not
allowed to change.

Hallway & Class Expectations

Arrival
98% of the time I will pick you up from the auditorium
Your voice should be at a zero in line
To save time I expect that you have your hat and coat already in your hand
(Boys always remove your cap entering building)
Enter classroom , place breakfast on desk and empty out your book bag
Entire class will line up inside and 8:20 and put book bags away
If you are not eating breakfast you are expected to begin your bell work/journal
topic immediately
The expectation is that by the end of the morning announcements we are ready to go
deep into our subject matter
There should be no conversation while people are eating , listening to the
announcements is key and it shows respect for those preparing themselves for the
learning day.

IF YOU ARE LATE YOU WILL BE ASKED TO HAVE A TARDY SO DONT PASS GO WITHOUT IT.
YOU WILL BE ASKED TO GO BACK DOWNSTAIRS- AFTER 8:20 you are LATE
Dismissal

Instruction will end at 3:05


Homework should be written in agenda book
Teacher will signal the entire group to line up and retrieve their belongings from
locker and return to class
All students will line up inside the class before being dismissed
All belongings should be removed from your basket and there should never be loose
articles around your desk and chair should be placed on top.
When everyone is lined up, class clean and quiet we will be dismissed
Your voice should be at a zero in line

Transition Time

Signals are as follows:
I will say Lets get Ready- this means stand push your chair in and check your basket
I will say Lets Rock- this means you should begin to line up silently
Ladies in West Isle (one row from hallway) -Gentlemen in East Isle (one row from windows)
or you will line up in your section next to your desk depending on the configuration
**Reminder please do not lean on the wall, bulletin boards or bookcases thank you**
I will say Lets Roll- this means you may pass out silently to your next class

Outside Class

The expectation is absolute silence in the hallways


Moving in silence demonstrates self-control , respect and preparation
Never Stand in the doorway of a class or peek in
Always stop at designated section one square apart in all directions- this means off
the lockers
YOU Should ALWAYS be found on a BROWN square anywhere in the building
Always stop at designated areas on the stairwell one step apart when possible
If you are turned around or looking back you will be motioned to the back of the line
Never allow an individual to get in front of you or squeeze in always take the next
place in line to avoid confusion.

Level 1 Language A Classroom Etiquettes

Walking- as a courtesy to your classmates and respect for the learning environment, we DO
NOT GET OUT OF OUR SEAT TO WALK AROUND FOR ANY REASON AT ANYTIME. Permission is
always granted after a hand is raised, called upon and given the go ahead. There is a time and a
place for everything. When we are moving in circles, group activities, partner work etc...
walking is permissible.

Talking- as a courtesy to your classmates and respect for the learning environment talking is
only admissible when working with partners and group discussion. There are two important
times when TALKING IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY:
1- ASKING AN INTELLIGENT QUESTION
2- ANSWERING AN INTELLIGENT QUESTION
A hand raised says I have some important to contribute to the class. This is the only way in
which you will be acknowledged.
A quick THANK YOU will always be your response when given the chance to speak before your
peers then continue with your question or statement.

Desk- demonstrating respect for yourself and others who may sit at your desk, please ensure
that no papers are sticking out of the desk. All papers should be in a folder. Appropriate folders
should be kept inside accordion folder. As a courtesy to your classmates and respect for the
learning environment, at no time shall you draw , write or place stickers on the desk. If for any
reason you feel that the surface of your desk is not suitable to work, please let me know and I
will ensure that it is cleaned . Please do not sit at a dirty desk. You have a right to a clean
environment.

Project Clean Up- Itis imperative that you ensure that all glue stains and loose paper clippings
are free from the floor and desk before leaving. Please note if you borrow scissors or other
items, YOU MUST RETURN THEM AT THE END OF THE PERIOD.

Trash-as a courtesy to your classmates and respect for the learning environment you are asked
to fold your unused paper . Please do not ball paper up!!! You are to keep these items at your
desk until passing out of class to minimize distractions. (in rare cases you can ask permission to
throw things away.

What to do when you I finish MY WORK Early
First check your work again carefully for any mistakes or accuracy
You can always pull out your novel and read
You can ask for time on the computer to practice a specific skill
You can study for upcoming test
You can ask to help a peer with their work
You can do a myriad of challenge activities- see me for card & folders
You can write letters, create a story or illustrate your understanding in someway

Entrance and Exit Slips Expectations


These slips are used as a part of my assessment. It is very important that you understand the
reason this is a practice.

Entrance
You should have your slip in your hand on the way into class
Sometimes I will give you something specific to be ready for the next day
Sometimes you are given something to research and answer on an index card
Exit
You should have your post it note in your hand ready to post or place into my hand
You should be able to articulate what you've learned or have questions

Note: Post it notes should be placed on the top of your desk when preparing yourself for class.
The note should have your initials or your name and abbreviated date before it can be
stamped. You must b e ready at the beginning of the class
Students who receive stamps receive extra credit for demonstrating this

Additional Technology Expectations

Use of IPADS and Chrome Books


As a courtesy to your classmates and respect for the learning environment Technology devices
are to be handle appropriately.

They should be returned at the end of class to their appropriate station


They should be reported to the teacher if the battery is running low
They should be logged out of when assignment is complete
They should never be used around food or drinks
They should never be in your hand walking around the class
Use of the camera is not allowed unless for an assignment

Use of devices in inappropriate ways will cause you to lose your classroom privileges.

Additional Behavior Expectations As a courtesy to your classmates and respect for the learning
environment the expectation is that you understand and follow our classroom as well as school
rules. You are expected to demonstrate on a daily basis what it means to BE RESPECTFUL, BE
RESPONSIBLE AND BE SAFE
The issuant of our golden tickets and Barney Bucks are one of our reward systems.
Be reminded that inappropriate behavior will be monitored using our infraction system.
Students you will be logged into logger daily for inappropriate behavior by whatever adult in
the build encounters you. ( Note: this includes Auditorium, Lunch, Recess and Hallway
Monitors) My desire is to only make positive phone calls home.

This will be a big part of our curriculum this year and the expectation is that you become
more self aware of your own needs as well as those of others and be able to respond in an
appropriate manner. Some of the topics we will cover are as follows:

Mindful Practice

Mindful Practices Cool & Calm Yoga is an innovative program that brings movement,
mindfulness, breath work and Social-Emotional Learning into the school setting. Along with the
physical and emotional benefits of yoga, this program incorporates SEL strategies to help build
student mind-body health, as well as self-awareness and self-regulation skills.

We will engage in this program once again this year and the hope is that you would gain
skills that you can use in any situation and anywhere you are. The expectation is that you are
engaged and an active participant.
