Daily Homework: Homework is always due at the beginning of the period. MOST missing or incomplete
homework may be handed in the next class for reduced credit. (There is no penalty for legal absences.)
Long-Term Projects/Writing Pieces: Late penalty of one letter grade per school day. HOWEVER, I am
understanding of extenuating circumstances as long as you discuss them with me.
Grading:
Some grades are based on whether or not you have completed an activity and some are based on whether or not
you you have mastered a particular skill. I make every effort possible to update School Tool on Fridays.
Every assignment is assigned a point value to it. The points vary with the length and depth of each assignment.
Grades will be calculated by dividing the total number of points earned for the quarter by the total number of
possible points. Below are rough estimates of point values for each category:

Reading:
CLASS: This year we will read the novels The Giver and A Monster Calls in addition to several shorter works including short
stories, articles, and poems.
INDEPENDENTLY: Students are expected to independently read an average of 20 minutes a night (or roughly 2 hours a
week.) If a reading assignment for homework is given, that can be put towards this time. Students will be asked to keep
track of the books they have read on their Book Record (a copy will be kept in their A-pad and on their website) as well as to
complete a blog post reviewing a book theyve read at least twice a quarter. Students need to print out a copy of the blog
post and turn it in by its deadline.
Writing:
CLASS: We will complete several pieces of writing this year including: literary essay, digital memoir, process reflections,
poems, and research-based commentaries.
INDEPENDENTLY: Students will be given writing assignments in their writers notebooks in and out of class. Students will
be asked throughout the quarter to post a piece of writing on their blog.
