La humanidad haba anhelado
desde siempre poseer la
capacidad de volar. Muchos lo
haban intentado y algunos,
como Otto Lilienthal, haban
pagado con su vida el empeo.
Estamos en el ao 1903, en las
dunas de Kitty Hawk, en la
costa de Carolina del Norte,
Estados Unidos, lugar de
suave terreno de arena y brisas
constantes. Dos fabricantes de bicicletas de Dayton, Ohio, los hermanos

Smithsonian Ins Wilbur y Orville Wright, llevan tres aos realizando pruebas de vuelo con cometas y
planeadores construidos por ellos mismos, y probablemente saben ya ms que nadie
sobre la desconocida ciencia de la aerodinmica. Cuentan con su propio tnel de
viento donde prueban los perfiles de las alas. Tienen la acertada idea de dotar al
avin de un elevador delantero, evitando as que el aparato entre bruscamente en
prdida con consecuencias desastrosas.
Sus planeadores, de una ligereza y solidez extraordinarias, fruto de su experiencia
en la fabricacin de bicicletas, realizan vuelos cada vez ms largos, algunos de
cerca de doscientos metros. Pero tienen que conseguir que el avin se eleve por sus
propios medios, se sostenga en el aire y sea controlado por su piloto. Como no les
sirve ningn motor de los fabricados hasta entonces, deciden fabricar ellos mismos
uno, de cuatro cilindros y 63 kilos de peso, que produce algo ms de 12 CV, una
relacin peso-potencia bastante buena para la poca. Unas cadenas de bicicleta
transmiten la energa a dos hlices que giran en sentidos opuestos
para neutralizar el par motor. Otro gran acierto.
Al nuevo aeroplano lo llamaron Flyer, el volador,
construido en madera de abeto de Noruega, tela y
cables, pesaba 274 kilos sin contar el piloto. El 17 de
diciembre es el da elegido. Era una maana fra y la of 16-22 knots was blowing. As usual, a coin was tossed

Mankind has longed to have the ability to fly since the dawn
of time. Many people had tried it and some, like Otto Lilienthal,
had paid the price for their dreams with their lives.
The year is 1903, the place the dunes of Kitty Hawk,
on the North Carolina coastline, USA, an area of smooth
ground and steady breezes. It is three years since two bicycle
makers of Dayton, Ohio, the brothers Wilbur and Orville
Wright, had started to experiment with kites and gliders built
by themselves. They already knew probably more about the
hitherto unknown science of aerodynamics than anyone else in the world. They
constructed their own wind tunnel, where wing profiles were tested. They had the sound
idea of fitting the aeroplane with a front elevator, thus avoiding the risk of the aircraft
suddenly plummeting into the ground with fatal consequences.
Their gliders, of an outstandingly light and solid construction as a result of their
experience in the manufacturing of bicycles, flew increasingly longer distances, some
of the flights achieving nearly 200 yards. But they had to manage to get the aeroplane
to take-off with its own power, sustain itself in the air and be controlled by the pilot.
As none of the engines available at
that time were of use for them, they
decided to construct one for
themselves, a four-cylinder engine
with a weight of 138 lbs. and
an output of 12 hp, a ratio of
power to weight fairly good for the
time. Bicycle chains were used for transmitting the power to the two propellers in order
to neutralize the torque. Another sound idea.
The new airplane was named Flyer and was made of Norwegian fir, fabric and
wires, weighting 602 lbs, not including the pilot. The chosen day was December the
17th. It was a cold morning and in the dunes rain had left small pools of water which
had been covered with a thin layer of ice. A Northern wind
to decide who was going the pilot that time. Orville,
the lucky one, occupied the pilots position and started the
engine. It was 10.35 am. He released the retention cable
and the aeroplane began to move slowly forward,
against a wind of 23 knots. After a run of some
12 yards the aircraft took off, climbed to 9 feet,
at a distance of little more than 30 yards away from
for 12 seconds. They had achieved it!. They were
the pioneers and therefore their names would
be engraved in the golden book of mankinds advances.

Es un organismo del Servicio Histrico y Cultural del Ejrcito del

Aunque el proyecto inicial proviene de la inmediata posguerra
tendran que pasar cuatro dcadas para que se abriera al
www.fio.es pblico, el 24 de mayo de 1981, en el apropiado marco del
histrico aerdromo de Cuatro Vientos, el primero en ser creado
en Espaa, en el ao 1911.
El crecimiento en sus instalaciones ha sido constante y ello se ha
reflejado en la construccin de nuevos hangares para
complementar el primero con el que se cont, crecimiento que ha
marchado en paralelo a la incorporacin de nuevas aeronaves
que se han ido aadiendo a la coleccin expuesta, algunas de
ellas reconstrucciones o rplicas al no poder encontrarse ya el
modelo original.
Actualmente la coleccin consta de ms de 125 aeronaves y de
multitud de objetos y uniformes aeronuticos, contndose con
piezas nicas como el Breguet XIX tipo Grand Raid Jess del Gran
Poder, un autogiro La Cierva C19, un Heinkel 111 E nico en el
mundo y el De Havilland Dragon Rapide que traslad al general
Franco de Las Palmas a Tetun para ponerse al frente del ejrcito
nacional al inicio de la Guerra Civil, as como diversos aviones
producidos por la industria aeronutica espaola como la
Hispano Aviacin, CASA y Aeronutica Industrial.
The Air Museum is part of the Air Force Historical and Cultural
Service, created to acquire and preserve the Spanish Aeronautical
heritage. This is displayed to the public for the general knowledge
and recognition of the most important aeronautical feats.
Although the original project dates back to the years immediately
after the Spanish Civil War, four decades would pass until the
Museum opened on 24th May 1981. It is appropriately situated in
the historical airfield of Cuatro Vientos, the first to be opened in Museo de Aeronutica
Spain in 1911. y Astronutica
The growth of the installations has been continuous and this has Carretera N-V, Km. 10,500
resulted in the erection of additional hangars. In parallel new 28071 Madrid
aircraft have been added to the collection, some of these being Tel: 91 5091690
restorations and replicas as the originals no longer exist.

The current collection has more than 125 aircraft and numerous www.aire.mde.es
aeronautical artefacts and uniforms, including such unique pieces
as the Breguet XIX Grand Raid Jess del Gran Poder, a Cierva
C19 autogyro, the sole-surviving Heinkel 111 in the world and the
De Havilland Dragon Rapide which carried General Franco from
Las Palmas to Tetuan to take charge of the Nationalist forces in the
beginning of the Civil War. There is also a collection of aeroplanes
built by the Spanish aeronautical companies, as Hispano
Aviacin, CASA and Aeronutica Industrial.
Parc Aeronutic de Catalunya
La Fundacion Parc Aeronutic de Catalunya nace en 1997
reuniendo un heterogneo conjunto de entidades y personas
significadas del mundo de la aeronutica catalana. El vnculo de
unin no era otro sino recuperar y dar a conocer el patrimonio
histrico aeronutico.
En la actualidad dispone de su sede central en el aeropuerto de
Sabadell y dos delegaciones en el Prat de Llobregat y Vilanova. En
los dos hangares de Sabadell se van almacenando, restaurando y
poniendo en vuelo una serie de aviones, planeadores y helicpteros,
con la ayuda de la Escuela de Formacin Ocupacional propia que
rene a 22 chicos y chicas que reciben enseanza bsica en estas
materias y que, de seguir con dichos estudios alcanzaran la
titulacin de TMA.
El tercer domingo de cada mes se abren las puertas y se pueden
contemplar algunas de las doce aeronaves en vuelo, las que se
hallan en curso de restauracin y las estticas.
Entre las primeras cabe destacar la nica T34 Mentor en vuelo en
Europa, una Fairchild 24R, un T6D, dos Bcker Jungmann, una no
tan antigua pero s muy rara S223 Flamingo y, operando desde el
aeropuerto de Gerona, el reactor HA220 Supersaeta.
Entre los numerosos aviones estticos cabe destacar un F86 Sabre y
un Lockheed T33, en Vilanova y, en El Prat, una Mignon Pou du Ciel
y una interesante rplica del Monocoqe con el que el pionero Hedilla
vol de Barcelona a Mallorca.
La edicin de monografas sobre temas de inters histrico, muy
especialmente relacionados con los inicios de la actividad
aeronutica en Catalua, y la celebracin de conferencias,
completan el panorama de las actividades de esta joven Fundacin
cultural.

Nowadays its headquarters are located at Sabadell Airport with two e-mail: fpac@fpac.org
local branches at El Prat de Llobregat and Vilanova. In the two www.fpac.org
hangars in Sabadell the aeroplanes, gliders and helicopters are
stored and restored to flying condition with the help of an
Occupational Training School run by the Foundation. The school has
22 students who are taught the basics of this subject, and they will
given a TMA (Aircraft Maintenance Engineer) qualification when they
finish their studies.
On the third Sunday of each month the headquarters are opened to
the public and several of the twelve airworthy aeroplanes can be
seen, as well as those under restoration and the static displays.
Amongst the airworthy planes are the only T34 Mentor currently in
flying condition in Europe, a Fairchild 24R, a T6D, two Bcker
Jungmann, one not very old but a very rare S223 Flamingo, as well
as a HA220 Supersaeta jet which operates from Gerona airport.
The static aircraft include a F86 Sabre, a Lockheed T33 at Vilanova,
and a Mignon Pou du Ciel, which can be seen at El Prat, along side
an interesting replica of the Monocoqe in which the aviation pioneer,
Hedilla, flew from Barcelona to Majorca.
The publication of papers and lectures on subjects of historical
interest, specially related to the beginnings of the aeronautical
activities in Catalonia, complete the activities of this young cultural
Foundation.
