Course Title : ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS TECHNOLOGY
Nature of Exam : Closed Book
Weightage : 35% No. of Pages =3
Duration : 2 Hours No. of Questions = 10
Date of Exam : 20/09/2015 (AN)
Note:
1. Please follow all the Instructions to Candidates given on the cover page of the answer book.
2. All parts of a question should be answered consecutively. Each answer should start from a fresh page.
3. Assumptions made if any, should be stated clearly at the beginning of your answer.

Q.1. Three resistors, 10 , 15 , and 20 are connected in parallel.

(a) Find the effective resistance of the parallel combination.
(b) If a voltage source of 12 V supplies current to this parallel combination, calculate
the currents in each of the resistances. [3]

Q.2. By nodal analysis of the circuit shown in Fig. Q2, determine and mark the currents in all
branches of the circuit, viz. AB, BC, CD, BD, CA, DA. [4]

Q.4. For the Wheatstone bridge network shown in Fig Q4, determine the current in the 1000
meter by use of Thevenins theorem. Clearly mark the direction of the current. [4]

Q.5. Fig. Q5 shows a 10 k potentiometer connected across the 12 V supply. The

potentiometer knob is at the centre of the resistance. When a 10 k voltmeter is connected
across the output of the potentiometer, what will be the voltmeter reading? Use Nortons
theorem to find the answer. [3]

Q.6. Three resistances, 100 , 50 and 150 are connected in delta. Determine and draw the
equivalent star connection. [3]

Q.7. In the circuit given in Fig Q7, the capacitor C is initially charged with a voltage of 5 V.

Fig. Q7
(a) Determine the value of the charging current at t = 0, when the switch is closed.
(b) Sketch the graph of current versus time.
(c) Sketch the graph of capacitor voltage versus time. [4]

Q.8. A sinusoidal voltage 200 sin(t) is applied across a resistance of 100 .

(a) Write down the expression for the current through the resistance.
(b) What is the rms value of the current waveform?
(c) Calculate the average power dissipated in the resistor. [3]

Q.9. A series RL circuit is shown in Fig Q9.

(a) With the applied voltage as the reference phasor, draw the phasor diagram of the
current in the series RL circuit of Fig Q9.
(b) Calculate the power factor and state whether it is a lagging power factor or leading
power factor.
(c) If a capacitor with a reactance of 10 is connected across A and B, draw the
current phasors for capacitor current and the current from supply on the phasor
diagram. [4]
